Halo: Campaign Evolved is a full remake of the original Halo: Combat Evolved, rebuilt with a bigger budget and three brand-new prequel missions added on top of the classic campaign. Before you drop money on it, knowing how much time you're actually getting out of the package is a fair question. The original Combat Evolved clocked in around 10 hours for a normal run, and this remake builds on that foundation in a few meaningful ways.

How long does a normal playthrough take?

For most players hitting the campaign for the first time, expect somewhere between 8 and 12 hours. That range accounts for a few variables: your familiarity with the original game, your chosen difficulty, and how much you explore versus push forward.

The base campaign follows the structure of the original Halo: Combat Evolved, which historically lands around 10 to 10.5 hours on a standard run. The remake adds three new prequel missions on top of that. Each one runs roughly 15 to 30 minutes, so together they contribute somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour and a half of fresh content. Factor in the other reworks and adjustments throughout the game, and you're looking at a total campaign that comfortably stretches past the original.

Difficulty is worth thinking about before you start. Legendary mode, in particular, will push your time well beyond the standard estimate and test your patience in ways that Normal and Heroic simply do not.

How long is a full completionist run?

Going for everything, including the full campaign, all Skulls, and the complete trophy and achievement list, puts your total time somewhere between 15 and 20 hours.

The complete Skulls list is one of the bigger time sinks here. There are 42 Skulls in the game, including new ones introduced in this remake, and tracking them all down takes deliberate effort across multiple levels. None of them are handed to you.

The trophy and achievement list adds more on top of that. Completing the campaign on Legendary difficulty is one of the requirements, which means at minimum one full extra playthrough at the hardest setting if you want that particular unlock. That alone can add several hours depending on how much trouble the difficulty gives you.

What adds the most time to your playthrough?

Three things will stretch your hours beyond the base campaign estimate:

  • Skull hunting: 42 total Skulls scattered across the game, with new additions unique to this remake
  • Legendary difficulty run: Required for certain achievements and trophies, adding a full campaign's worth of time
  • Trophy and achievement completion: Extra objectives that send you back into levels for specific tasks you wouldn't naturally attempt
tip
There is no online multiplayer in Halo: Campaign Evolved, so that won't factor into your total hours. The package is entirely campaign-focused.

Is the game length worth the price?

For a shooter game built around a single-player campaign, 8 to 12 hours is a solid first run, and 15 to 20 hours for completionists is a reasonable return on investment. The three new prequel missions are the clearest sign that Halo Studios wasn't just selling a straight port with updated visuals.

tip
Even if you only plan one playthrough, set aside time for at least some Skull hunting. The new Skulls added for this remake are worth seeing, and they change how the game plays in genuinely interesting ways.
