Overview
Hitman 2 is a third-person stealth game developed by IO Interactive and published by WB Games, released on November 13, 2018. Players control Agent 47, a genetically engineered assassin contracted to eliminate high-value targets across six distinct sandbox environments. The game continues directly from the 2016 HITMAN reboot, building on its systems while introducing new mechanics and a more involved narrative thread.
The story follows 47 as he hunts the mysterious Shadow Client on behalf of Providence, a clandestine organization that controls world affairs from the shadows. In exchange for tracking down this elusive figure, Providence promises to reveal 47's origins, giving the narrative real momentum beyond the mission-to-mission structure. The plot grows progressively more complicated as identities blur and loyalties shift.

Gameplay and mechanics
The core loop of Hitman 2 is built around creative assassination. Each mission drops Agent 47 into a large, densely populated environment with a target to eliminate and almost complete freedom in how to do it. The game rewards preparation, patience, and lateral thinking over reflexes.

Key mechanics include:
- Disguise system with NPC suspicion tracking
- Briefcase item concealment for large weapons
- Crowd blending in dense public areas
- Instinct mode for target and threat detection
- Sniper Assassin co-op mode
The briefcase is a notable addition over the previous game, letting 47 carry a sniper rifle or other large items through a level without raising immediate alarms. Crowd cover, introduced here, allows 47 to blend into groups of bystanders, making urban environments feel genuinely alive and useful rather than just decorative.

World and setting
The six main locations span a remarkable geographic spread. Miami puts 47 in the middle of a Formula 1 race with tens of thousands of NPCs filling the stands. Whittleton Creek sends him into a picture-perfect American suburb where danger hides behind white picket fences. The Colombia rainforest mission is dense, dark, and tense in ways the sun-soaked Miami level never is.
Each environment is designed with multiple entry points, disguise opportunities, and scripted NPC routines that 47 can exploit. Learning a level across multiple playthroughs reveals new routes and opportunities that weren't visible on the first pass. That layered design is what separates Hitman 2 from games that simply give players a target and a gun.
Content and replayability
Hitman 2 has a legitimate argument for being one of the most replayable games in its genre. Each mission supports challenge lists, escalation contracts, and Elusive Targets, time-limited assassination missions that only appear once. The Ghost Mode multiplayer, now discontinued, once let two players race to eliminate the same targets across a shared map without directly interacting.
The Gold Edition includes two expansion passes covering additional story missions, maps, and outfits. Players who owned the 2016 HITMAN game can also import its locations into Hitman 2, effectively doubling the available content. Sniper Assassin maps add a separate co-op experience where two players coordinate long-range kills from a fixed position.

Is Hitman 2 worth playing for stealth fans?
For anyone serious about stealth games, Hitman 2 sits near the top of the genre. The sandbox assassination design gives players genuine agency, and the level quality is consistently high across the campaign. Miami alone represents some of the best open-level design IO Interactive has ever produced, with a target routine that weaves through a working race event in ways that feel organic rather than scripted. The game's challenge system keeps experienced players engaged long after the credits roll, and the ability to import legacy content from the 2016 entry makes it one of the most content-dense stealth experiences available.
