Introduction

Empire City is under quarantine, crime has consumed every district, and the one man who might save it is also the man everyone blames for the explosion that started it all. Infamous drops you into Sucker Punch Productions' PS3-era open-world action game where a bike courier gains electrical superpowers and gets to decide what kind of hero, or villain, he wants to be.

Overview

Infamous, released on May 26, 2009, is a PS3 exclusive from Sucker Punch Productions that puts players in the shoes of Cole MacGrath, an ordinary courier who survives a catastrophic explosion in Empire City and wakes up able to generate, absorb, and weaponize electricity. The game builds its entire identity around that central tension: you have extraordinary power, a city in chaos, and a morality system that shapes how the story unfolds and how the population responds to you.

Empire City is split into three districts, each locked down until Cole restores power and fights back the faction controlling it. The Neon District falls under the Reapers, the Warren is overrun by the Dust Men, and the Historic District sits at the center of the conspiracy surrounding the Ray Sphere, the device that gave Cole his abilities in the first place. Progression feels genuinely earned because each district starts hostile and gradually becomes navigable as Cole gains influence.

The karma system is not just cosmetic. Good and Evil paths change how NPCs react, unlock different powers, and shift key story moments. Cole's relationship with Zeke, Trish, and the mysterious Kessler plays out differently depending on choices, and the game earns its moral weight by making some of those decisions genuinely uncomfortable.

Gameplay and mechanics

Cole's electricity-based moveset is the engine that makes Infamous work as an open-world platformer. He can grind power lines, scale buildings with magnetic grip, and string together combat encounters using a variety of electrical attacks.

Key mechanics include:

  • Lightning bolt ranged attacks
  • Shockwave melee combat
  • Arc restraint (non-lethal takedowns)
  • Grinding on rails and cables for traversal
  • Radar pulse for enemy detection

The traversal system deserves particular credit. Empire City's vertical geometry was designed around Cole's movement, and getting around the city never feels like a chore. Climbing a skyscraper to launch a precision bolt at a Reaper sniper feels exactly as satisfying as it sounds.

World and setting

Empire City draws clear inspiration from New York City, but the quarantine transforms it into something more oppressive. Federal forces block the only bridge out, martial law has effectively collapsed, and the civilian population swings between grateful and terrified depending on Cole's behavior. Sucker Punch built distinct personalities into each district, from the neon-lit commercial density of the Neon District to the waterlogged industrial sprawl of the Warren.

The storyline surrounding the First Sons, the shadowy organization behind the Ray Sphere, gives the open-world structure a genuine narrative spine. Kessler, the game's primary antagonist, is one of the more memorable villains from that generation of PS3 games, and the late-game reveal around his identity recontextualizes everything that came before it.

Does the karma system actually matter?

Yes, and more than most games from 2009 managed. The Good and Evil paths unlock separate powers, with the Evil track generally offering more destructive options at the cost of civilian casualties. Story beats shift, including the brutal sequence where Cole must choose between saving Trish or a group of doctors, a choice the game refuses to let him win regardless of alignment. The population's hostility or support also changes how traversal feels at street level, since angry civilians throw objects at Cole while grateful ones cheer him on.

Impact and legacy

Infamous arrived during a period when open-world superhero games were still finding their footing, and Sucker Punch's effort stood out for treating its morality system as a genuine gameplay layer rather than a cosmetic slider. The game sold well enough to spawn a direct sequel and eventually the Second Son spinoff on PS4. Cole MacGrath remains one of the more distinctive PlayStation protagonists from the PS3 generation, and the core formula of district-by-district liberation with escalating powers holds up as a template that later games in the series continued to build on.
