Four years after the anime revived Night City's player population, CD Projekt Red is doing it again. Cyberpunk 2077 is getting Update 2.5 on October 22, timed to the release of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2, and it's bringing more than a few cosmetic nods to the show.

What Update 2.5 is actually adding

CD Projekt Red confirmed the update includes new items and features directly inspired by the second season of the anime. The studio specifically called out cyberware customization and a brand-new dual-wielding playstyle as headline additions. Those two features alone represent a meaningful shift in how players can build and play V in Night City, not just cosmetic window dressing.

Associate game director Pawel Sasko posted that he's "so f***ing hyped" to show players what the team has built, which suggests the update has more depth than a quick content drop. A REDstreams livestream is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21 at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET, where the full scope of 2.5 will be previewed before the patch goes live the following day.

Why the Edgerunners connection runs deeper than marketing

This isn't the first time the anime and the game have fed each other. When Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 1 debuted in 2022, it pulled a huge wave of lapsed players back into Night City. CD Projekt Red responded with a free update that added Edgerunners-inspired cosmetics, and the momentum never really stopped. The game has now passed 40 million copies sold as of July 2026, a number that would have seemed unlikely given the state of the launch back in December 2020.

Season 2 dropping alongside a substantive game update is the same playbook, executed with considerably more confidence. The studio has had years of post-launch recovery to build on, including the Phantom Liberty expansion and a PS5 Pro patch that pushed the game's visuals further than most players expected.

The bigger picture as the sixth anniversary approaches

Update 2.5 lands just weeks before Cyberpunk 2077 turns six years old. The fact that CD Projekt Red is still shipping free content updates at this stage says something about how much the game's commercial performance has justified continued investment. Development on Cyberpunk 2 is ongoing, with game director Gabe Amatangelo recently discussing how his vision for the sequel continues to evolve beyond its original scope.

For now, though, Night City has fresh chrome waiting. If you want to get ahead of everything Update 2.5 changes to builds and progression, the Cyberpunk 2077 guide collection will be the place to check once the patch is live. And if you're new to the broader world of build optimization and want broader context, the gaming guides hub has you covered across the board.

The October 21 livestream is the next concrete moment to watch. Tune in to see exactly how deep the dual-wielding system goes before Night City updates on the 22nd.
