Red Hook Studios has announced The Fire's Edge, brand new DLC for the original Darkest Dungeon, dropping August 18, 2026 on PS4 and other platforms. For a game that first launched on PS4 nearly a decade ago, that's a genuinely surprising move, and it marks the first new DLC pack for the title in over six years.
Two familiar faces from the sequel
The headline additions are two new playable characters: The Duelist and The Runaway. Both will be recognizable to anyone who has spent time with Darkest Dungeon® II, where these heroes already exist. Here's the thing, though, porting them back into the original game isn't just a copy-paste job. They bring the Burn mechanic with them, a system that wasn't part of the base game's original design, which means The Fire's Edge is adding a meaningful new layer to how combat plays out, not just padding the roster.
The Duelist fits naturally into the original game's punishing, positional combat system, while The Runaway's fire-based kit should create some genuinely different strategic options for players who have already exhausted the existing roster.
What else The Fire's Edge adds
Beyond the two new heroes, the DLC brings three new Districts to the game, expanding the town management side that longtime fans know well. New Trinkets with unique mechanics are also included, which matters more than it might sound since Trinket builds are a significant part of how players optimize their parties in the long run.
Red Hook has also confirmed new writing, new events, and what the studio describes as "more surprises to come," which suggests The Fire's Edge may have a few things it isn't fully showing yet ahead of the August 18 release.
A decade-old game still getting supported
The original Darkest Dungeon launched in Early Access back in early 2016 and hit PS4 not long after. The fact that Red Hook is still supporting it with paid content in 2026 puts it in interesting company. Diablo II and Castle Crashers have both received new content recently, and The Witcher 3 has a full expansion coming in 2027. There's clearly an appetite from developers and players alike to revisit games that still have active communities rather than abandoning them entirely once a sequel ships.
The sequel, Darkest Dungeon® II, took the series in a noticeably different direction, leaning into a road-trip roguelite structure that split the fanbase. Some players prefer it, many still prefer the dungeon-crawling tension of the original. This DLC feels like Red Hook acknowledging that the first game's audience never really left.
Pro tip: if you've been sitting on the original Darkest Dungeon and haven't finished it, August 18 gives you a solid target to work toward. The new characters will be available from the start of a run, so there's no need to complete the base game first to access them.
For players looking to get the most out of the new content when it drops, the Darkest Dungeon® II strategy guides cover both games in the series and are worth bookmarking ahead of launch.
