Six new heroes just dropped into Deadlock alongside the biggest map overhaul the game has seen yet. Valve's City Never Sleeps update reshapes every corner of the cursed city, gives players a fresh roster of characters to fight over, and quietly buries a stack of quality-of-life improvements that will make the game feel noticeably different the moment you load in.

A city split into three personalities

The entire map has been carved into three distinct visual themes: a bright, bustling city center, a haunted university, and a shadowy stock exchange district. Every building, every creep, and every lane now reflects whichever zone it sits in. The heart of the map is crawling with pickle jars that have hands growing out of them. The right lane features sentient stacks of books. The left lane has slimy trashbag monsters lurking around corners.

Four named districts fill out the space between those themes. The theater district is particularly worth noting, populated by literal stage hands puppeteering steampunk automatons. Up in the Chinatown district, a bell tower sits atop the area and serves as a contested objective where teams can fight over a soul fountain for a currency advantage in close matches. Even the wooden resource crates have been redesigned, now padlocked and bolted shut.

This isn't a coat of paint slapped over existing geometry. The whole city reads differently now, and players who have logged hours on the previous version will need to relearn sightlines, patrol routes, and objective timings from scratch.

Meet the six new heroes

Valve is rolling out the new roster two heroes per week, starting this Friday, with the order determined by player voting. Here's the full lineup:

The Rat King is the one everyone has been waiting for. The character originated as a fan-made concept posted to the community roughly a year ago and spiraled into a full-blown meme before Valve quietly made it official. A crowned rodent with what looks like genuine menace is a hard pitch to ignore.

The voting system mirrors how Valve handled the previous batch of hero releases, so the community gets some say in who shows up first. Two heroes per week means the full six will be playable within three weeks of the update going live.

UI and gameplay changes that actually matter

Beyond the map and heroes, the update ships a long list of changes that touch almost every system in the game:

  • Health bars are bolder and easier to read at a glance
  • Teammate indicators now show nearby allies even when they're off-screen
  • Kill feed clarity has been improved significantly
  • The shop has been rebuilt with a more intuitive layout and item filters
  • Ping options have expanded with new ways to mark locations and objects
  • Voice lines have doubled for all characters, and a new menu lets you browse them
  • Bot creation tools are now available for solo practice sessions
  • Combat log has been expanded with detailed breakdowns for players who want the numbers
  • Accessibility options include custom UI colors, subtitles, and toggles for auto-move, auto-mantle, and auto-shoot

The shop overhaul alone is worth paying attention to. Deadlock's item system has always had a learning curve, and the new filters should cut down the time new players spend fumbling through menus mid-fight. Pair that with the expanded combat breakdown and you have a game that's quietly becoming more readable for everyone.

Valve has also confirmed there are additional changes in the update that it's intentionally keeping undocumented, leaving players to discover them organically.

Still invite-only, still in development

Despite the scale of this update, Deadlock remains invite-only. There's no public release date on the table. The City Never Sleeps update is Valve's second major overhaul for the game, and each one has pushed it closer to something that feels like a finished product without Valve ever officially calling it that.

The key here is that Valve keeps shipping updates of this size without opening the doors wider. At some point the gap between what's in the game and what constitutes a full release becomes hard to explain. For now, if you have access, the updated city is worth exploring from scratch. If you're still waiting on an invite, the Deadlock strategy guides are a solid way to get ahead of the meta before you ever load in.
