Donkey Kong Bananza Brings DK Back

Donkey Kong is back, and this time he’s heading underground. Donkey Kong Bananza kicks off with a major discovery on Ingot Isle: golden bananas buried deep below the surface. For Donkey Kong, it sounds like paradise. But a sudden storm sends him crashing into the depths beneath the island. That’s where things get weird - and where the adventure really begins.

Instead of flying solo, DK is joined by a new partner, Pauline, a 13-year-old with a powerful voice and just enough attitude to keep up with the big guy. Together, they explore a vast subterranean world, uncover the mystery behind the banana-rich chaos, and try to stop a greedy villain from claiming it all for himself.

At its core, Donkey Kong Bananza is a platformer that leans into destruction. Whether it’s crashing through walls, tearing up terrain, or punching through floors, Donkey Kong’s signature strength plays a huge role in how players move through the environment. The deeper you go, the more the world shifts - each layer has its own look and feel, and exploring all of it means finding creative ways to break things apart.

Pauline isn't just tagging along, either. Her voice can literally reshape the environment. Whether blasting away obstacles, unlocking sealed areas, or pointing players in the right direction with musical cues, her abilities add a puzzle-solving layer to the game’s moment-to-moment action.

Bananza Transformations and Egg Bombs

One of the biggest new features in Bananza is the introduction of Bananza Transformations. Donkey Kong can take on different forms that dramatically change how he plays. Kong Bananza amps up the destruction, letting you plow through hardened terrain with ease. Zebra Bananza speeds things up, helping DK cross unstable ground and skim over water.

Ostrich Bananza throws in aerial movement, letting players glide and drop explosive Egg Bombs from above. You can switch between these transformations freely, depending on the situation. The catch is the Bananergy gauge, which limits how long you can stay transformed. Managing this resource adds a layer of strategy to otherwise chaotic gameplay.

Pauline’s Biggest Role in Donkey Kong

This is Pauline’s biggest role in a Donkey Kong game yet, and she brings more than just vocals. Her singing can activate environmental changes and serve as a gameplay mechanic in its own right. When Donkey Kong and Pauline team up - especially during music-driven segments - their abilities combine in smart ways that keep gameplay feeling fresh and cooperative.

Whether you're playing solo or teaming up in 2-player co-op, there's an emphasis on working together. In co-op mode, one player controls DK while the other rides along as Pauline, using her voice to clear paths and help with combat. It’s a smart setup that keeps the action tight while offering something different from traditional split-screen multiplayer.

Void Kong and the Race to the Planet Core

No Donkey Kong game would be complete without a villain, and Bananza delivers with Void Kong, the greedy head of Void Company. His goal is the Planet Core - a mysterious power source said to grant wishes. Along with his team, Void Kong creates most of the game’s challenges, obstacles, and chaos, including the storm that threw Donkey Kong underground in the first place.

The deeper players go, the more they’ll uncover about Void Company’s plans and their connection to the golden bananas. The story stays light, but it gives the gameplay some weight and drives the adventure forward.

Options for All Kinds of Players

For those new to platformers or just looking for a more relaxed experience, Bananza offers an Assist Mode. It includes aim assist, path guidance, reduced damage, and regenerating health. It’s a solid way to make the game more accessible without dumbing it down.

On top of that, co-op is available both locally and online, using Joy-Con controllers or GameShare. Whether playing with a friend on the couch or connecting remotely, the shared experience is a great fit for a game focused on teamwork.

Final Thoughts

Donkey Kong Bananza feels like a fresh take on a classic character. It keeps the core appeal of smashing stuff and platforming through colorful environments, but mixes in just enough new ideas - like transformations, musical mechanics, and co-op gameplay - to make it stand out. Now available on Nintendo Switch, Donkey Kong Bananza is ready to take players on a wild trip beneath Ingot Isle.
