Double Fine Brings Back Amnesia Fortnight After Xbox Split

If you've been following Double Fine Productions since their split from Microsoft and Xbox, here's the news you've been waiting for. The studio is bringing back Amnesia Fortnight, its legendary internal game jam, kicking off on August 31. And this time, fans get a seat at the table.

The revival comes paired with a new Kickstarter campaign, which means the community gets to vote on which prototype pitches actually get developed during the jam. That's the part that made Amnesia Fortnight special back in its heyday, and Double Fine is leaning straight into it.

From Xbox subsidiary to independent studio

Double Fine's road back to independence has been anything but quiet. After Microsoft acquired the studio in 2019, the relationship eventually fractured, and the split earlier this year was followed by a round of layoffs that hit 23 members of the team. That's a real gut punch for any studio, especially one with Double Fine's history.

Still, the team kept shipping. Their multiplayer pottery brawler Kiln launched and landed well enough to make it into Xbox Game Pass during April 2026's Wave 2 alongside Aphelion and Trepang2. So the studio wasn't sitting still while navigating the transition.

tip
Amnesia Fortnight originally ran as a two-week internal game jam where Double Fine developers pitched and built experimental prototypes. Past jams produced games like Costume Quest, Stacking, and Hack 'n' Slash.

What the Kickstarter actually means for fans

Here's the thing: the Kickstarter isn't just a funding mechanism. It's how Double Fine decides which pitches survive. Backers historically vote on prototype concepts, and the ones with the most support get built during the jam's live development window. The studio streams the process, so you can watch ideas turn into playable games in real time.

That format made Amnesia Fortnight genuinely exciting to follow. It's one of the few times a studio let outsiders feel like they were actually part of the creative process, not just marketing targets.

With Double Fine now operating independently again, the jam feels less like a corporate-approved side project and more like the studio returning to what it actually wants to do. Whether that translates into fully released games down the line depends on which prototypes click, but the format has a track record of producing real titles.

What to watch for starting August 31

The Kickstarter goes live alongside the jam's start date, so if you want to influence which prototypes get built, that's when to jump in. Double Fine has described the process as a live game jam, meaning the development happens publicly rather than behind closed doors.

For fans of experimental games and smaller, weirder ideas that big publishers rarely greenlight, this is exactly the kind of thing worth paying attention to. The studio that made Psychonauts, Brutal Legend, and Broken Age doing an open-door prototype sprint with community input is a genuinely interesting setup.
