Square Enix announces Final Fantasy VII Revelation, the conclusion in its trilogy – Digitally Downloaded

Square Enix has confirmed that Final Fantasy VII Rebirth follow-up Final Fantasy VII Revelation launches on PS5 on April 8, 2027. The announcement came alongside a substantial gameplay reveal that showed off new locations, new combat systems, and a fully open world traversable by airship.

This is the final entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake Series, wrapping up a trilogy that started with Final Fantasy VII Remake back in April 2020. Nearly seven years between the first game and the last one. That's a long wait, but the scope of what's been shown suggests Square Enix isn't cutting corners on the finish line.

What the FITS system actually does

The biggest mechanical reveal is the Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear system, shortened to FITS. It lets players assign one of four roles to party members: Warrior, Knight, Black Mage, or Summoner. Each role fundamentally changes how a character fights, not just in numbers but in move sets and visual appearance. The trailer showed Cid in the Knight FITS and Vincent in the Summoner FITS, and the difference between them looks dramatic.

Here's the thing: this isn't just a cosmetic swap. FITS changes the actual combat functions of each character, which opens up real tactical variety for a game where you're managing a full party across a massive open world.

The chocobo companion Piko returns from Rebirth, but with a bigger role this time. Piko can now strike enemies in combat and grows stronger alongside the party, gaining new traversal and battle capabilities as the story progresses.

Players can also parachute directly from the Highwind airship to specific ground locations, making open-world traversal faster than anything in the previous two entries.

Queen's Blood, Wutai, and the Highwind

Fans of the Queen's Blood card minigame from Rebirth will be happy: it's back, and it's bigger. The new Queen's Blood campaign in Revelation centers on Red XIII and introduces opponents who can actively alter board states mid-match. That's a meaningful mechanical expansion, not just more of the same.

Exploration looks like the most ambitious part of the game. Players get access to the Highwind airship early on, opening up the entire planet for traversal. On top of that, a new Grappling Gun lets players scale rooftops and reach elevated areas quickly. Locations shown in the reveal include Wutai village and several open-world regions, along with at least one of the planet's powerful Weapons.

The character-switching feature also extends to quests. Players can choose which party member takes on specific missions, and those choices shape how story events and gameplay scenarios play out. That's a notable addition for a game that already has a large cast.

Pre-orders, Premium Editions, and what you get

Pre-orders are live now. Every edition comes with the Mecha-Chocobo & Moogle Summon Materia as a pre-order bonus.

The Story Expansion Pass covers two story-focused DLC packs. Details on those haven't been shared yet, but they're confirmed as narrative content rather than cosmetic add-ons.
