Sleeping in Gothic 1 Remake is not as straightforward as it sounds. Almost every bed you spot in the Colony has a red ownership marker on it, and the second you close your eyes in the wrong cot, the NPC who owns it will drag you out of it. Loudly. Sleeping heals wounds and lets you manually advance time, with each selectable dot on the rest menu representing one full hour, so finding a reliable spot matters from the very first night.

Arena hut, your first free bed
The arena hut is your best early option
The Old Camp has a couple of genuinely free beds available right from the start, and the best one is tied to a short conversation. Talk to Guy near the arena and he mentions a hut that recently got cleared out. From the north entrance of the camp, head left and push through the cluster of shacks until you reach the upper viewing platforms of the arena. Look for a shack with a red cloth canopy over the door, two drying animal pelts flanking the entrance, and a fireplace with a scavenger bird on a spit outside. The bed inside carries no red marker, making it entirely yours to use whenever you want.
Pro tip: loot the chest inside that hut before you do anything else. The previous occupant left behind the Forgotten Recipe quest item, which is easy to miss if you just walk in, sleep, and leave.
A second option sits on the other side of the camp. Near the smithy, find an open entrance with a ladder on the left leading upward. Inside that small space are two beds, one owned and one free. It lacks the privacy of the arena shack, but it works fine for a quick rest when you are already on that side of town.
How NPC schedules create free windows everywhere
Here's the thing: you do not always need to find a permanently unclaimed bed. The Colony's residents follow daily routines and regularly leave their huts empty for hours at a stretch. Any time you spot an empty shack, walking in and sleeping until morning is a perfectly viable strategy.
Even getting caught carries almost no consequence. If an NPC finds you squatting, the typical response is a verbal warning, not a fight. Wait for them to walk away, and the bed is yours again. The AI behavior makes this an absurdly reliable fallback throughout the early game.

Swamp Camp's top-level free hut
Sleeping in the Swamp Camp
If quests pull you away from the Old Camp and into the swamp, there is a free bed waiting up there too. Keep climbing the ladders and wooden walkways until you reach the highest point of the camp structure. A free hut sits at the top, well away from the activity below.
What most players miss is how the Swamp Camp's sleeping situation connects to its faction structure. Bed access and progression through the Guru ranks are more intertwined than they appear at first glance. The full breakdown of sleeping spots, faction limits, and the Guru progression wall is covered in the Swamp Camp faction and beds guide.
The key here is that you should never spend a night wandering the Colony looking for somewhere to crash. Between the arena hut, the smithy backup bed, the top-level Swamp Camp hut, and the NPC schedule loophole, there are enough options to stay rested from the very first hour.
