GTA 5 Reaches 225 Million Copies Sold.jpg

Grand Theft Auto 5 has crossed 225 million copies sold worldwide, cementing its status as one of the most commercially successful games ever made. Take-Two Interactive's latest quarterly earnings report confirms the milestone, up from 220 million units reported previously. More than a decade after launch, the game continues to move units at a pace few titles sustain past their first year.

Originally released in 2013, GTA 5 has been re-released and upgraded across three console generations and PC. Each new platform brought technical improvements and fresh marketing momentum, keeping the game visible in storefronts and sales charts long after most titles fade from relevance.

Why GTA 5 keeps selling

The game launched on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, then expanded to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC, and eventually PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles. Every hardware generation introduced visual upgrades, performance improvements, and new audiences who hadn't played the original release. That multi-platform strategy turned a single game into a recurring revenue source across more than ten years.

Take-Two has sustained sales through discounts, bundles, and platform-specific enhancements. Even as the industry shifted toward live-service models and subscription platforms, GTA 5 remained a consistent seller during promotional windows and hardware launches. The game's presence in sales charts is less about hype and more about availability and timing.

GTA Online drives recurrent spending up 27 percent

GTA Online remains a significant revenue driver. Take-Two reported that recurrent customer spending rose 23 percent overall during the quarter, with GTA Online specifically up 27 percent. That spending comes from in-game purchases tied to content updates, expansions, and ongoing live-service support. Players continue to spend money on virtual items, vehicles, and cosmetics years after the base game launched.

Take-Two expects recurrent spending to grow another 17 percent year over year, assuming GTA Online maintains its current engagement levels. Regular content drops and long-term player retention have made the online mode a core financial pillar for the franchise. Even with GTA 6 on the horizon, GTA Online shows no signs of slowing down.

GTA 5's role ahead of GTA 6

The fact that GTA 5 is still growing sales in 2026 is unusual. Most games peak at launch and decline steadily. GTA 5 has done the opposite, sustaining momentum through platform expansions and online engagement. As GTA 6 approaches its November 2026 release, GTA 5 and GTA Online remain central to Take-Two's financial outlook, both as revenue generators and as an entry point for new players discovering the series.

At 225 million copies sold, GTA 5 sets a high bar for its successor. It also proves that Rockstar's open-world formula has staying power that extends well beyond a typical game lifecycle.
