Rockstar has finally put numbers to what everyone suspected: Grand Theft Auto 6 is operating on a completely different scale than anything the studio has built before. The map is three times larger than Red Dead Redemption 2's playable area and twice the size of GTA 5's. Vice City itself is twice the size of Los Santos, and when you factor in the surrounding suburbs and countryside, that zone is 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its outskirts combined.
Those figures came out of a select group of content creators who visited Rockstar North for a private look at the game, with the studio directly confirming the comparisons.
Why the RDR2 comparison hits differently
Here's the thing: a lot of people instinctively assume Red Dead Redemption 2's map is bigger than GTA 5's because it feels bigger. You're on a horse, the terrain is dense, and fast travel is limited. But GTA 5 has always had the larger raw footprint. RDR2 just made every square mile count more.
So when Rockstar says GTA 6's map is three times RDR2's size, that's a genuinely massive number. RDR2 already felt overwhelming at times. Triple that, and you're looking at a world that could take serious hours just to cross.
The animation count tells a similar story. GTA 6 reportedly contains well over 600,000 animations. GTA 5 had 55,000. RDR2 had 300,000. The jump from GTA 5 to GTA 6 is not incremental.
Vice City is the real story here
Rockstar North boss Aaron Garbut put it plainly: "Every room in the game, somebody thought about this. Who's sitting where, what they're drinking, the marks that are left on the table. The pictures on the wall will have the people that are in that room, with their tattoos on their arms and their family behind them."
That level of density applied to a city twice the size of Los Santos is a different proposition entirely. Los Santos always felt a little too compact to convincingly sell the Los Angeles fantasy. Vice City being twice that size means Rockstar has room to actually build something that feels like a living metropolitan area rather than a theme park version of one.
The surrounding region being 11 times bigger than Los Santos and its surroundings is the number that really puts the scope in perspective. That's not just a bigger city. That's a whole state's worth of terrain.
What 80 hours of story and a six-star wanted system means at this scale
Rockstar has also confirmed the main story playthrough runs roughly 80 hours, and the game brings back the six-star wanted level system. Both of those details land differently when you're picturing a map this large. Eighty hours of story content spread across a world three times the size of RDR2 suggests Rockstar isn't padding the runtime with commutes. The wanted system scaling up to six stars across that much terrain means police chases could play out over genuinely long distances.
