GTA Online Gambling Features Quietly Blocked for Australian Players

Rockstar Games has quietly pulled the plug on all gambling mini-games inside GTA Online's Diamond Casino for players in Australia, effective as of late July 2026. Blackjack, poker, slots, roulette, and the Inside Track horse racing mode are all gone. Even the free-to-spin lucky wheel is disabled. The rest of the casino, including its missions and other activities, still works fine.

For context, these features had been live in Australia without issue for seven years, dating back to the Diamond Casino & Resort update that dropped on July 23, 2019 for Grand Theft Auto V. The sudden removal, with no official announcement from Rockstar, is what makes this story genuinely puzzling.

Why now, and why is nobody sure

Here's the thing: the timing does not line up neatly with any single piece of legislation. Australia introduced new mandatory minimum classification guidelines for gambling-like content in video games back in September 2024, requiring any game featuring simulated casino activities to carry an R18+ rating. That rule has been on the books for nearly two years. A separate online safety code introduced in March 2026 pushed platforms to add age verification barriers for adult content, but that deadline also passed months ago.

GTA Online already carries an R18+ rating in Australia. Grand Theft Auto V launched with that classification back in 2013 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The classification guideline shift technically changes nothing about where the game sits on the ratings scale. So whatever prompted Rockstar to act now remains unclear, and the studio has not issued a public statement explaining the decision.

The Diamond Casino's non-gambling content, including story missions, property access, and general activities tied to the location, remains fully playable for Australian users.

How the casino's economy actually works

The removal raises a fair question about whether real money is genuinely at stake here. In GTA Online, players buy casino chips using in-game currency earned through missions and activities. Real money can be spent to purchase Shark Cards, which convert to in-game currency, but that currency was explicitly blocked from being used to buy casino chips. There is also no mechanism in the game to convert casino winnings back into real-world cash.

That separation is significant. Online casino gaming has been illegal in Australia under the Interactive Gambling Act 2001 for 25 years, but the Diamond Casino was never a direct analog to a real gambling platform. The lack of a real-money-in, real-money-out loop is the key distinction most observers point to when questioning whether the block is legally necessary at all.

Australia does have one of the highest per-capita gambling rates in the world, with losses equivalent to over $1,500 per adult annually. That context makes regulators particularly sensitive to anything that resembles gambling promotion, even when the actual mechanics sit well outside traditional legal definitions.

Australia joins a long list

With this change, Australia has joined roughly 50 countries where GTA Online's casino betting features have been blocked since the Diamond Casino launched. That list includes Portugal, Poland, Argentina, Greece, Luxembourg, South Africa, South Korea, China, and Malta, among others. For most of those regions, the block was applied at launch in 2019. Australia operating freely for seven years before hitting the same wall is the unusual part of this story.

Rockstar has not confirmed what specifically triggered the change this week. Whether it stems from a new regulatory conversation with Australian authorities, a proactive compliance decision ahead of further legislation, or something else entirely is still unknown. Players waiting for answers will need to watch for an official response.

If you're an Australian player looking to make the most of what still works in the game, the GTA Online strategy guides cover everything from heist planning to property management while the casino situation plays out.
