Guild Wars Afterlife has been announced for January 13, 2027, with ArenaNet and co-developer 2Weeks bringing paid DLC to Guild Wars Reforged. The original Guild Wars is getting another round of new content while ArenaNet continues supporting Guild Wars 2®.
For returning players, the standout addition is a dungeon built around repeat runs and changing skill selections. Afterlife pairs that mechanical shake-up with a new region and story, giving veterans both unfamiliar territory and a different way to tackle combat.
The Unformed puts skill drafting into each run
Afterlife introduces The Unformed, a roguelike dungeon that changes after each attempt. Its design combines a shifting dungeon with decisions about which skills players take into a run.
Two systems shape that progression:
- Skill drafting: Players select skills to assemble a distinct skill bar that changes between attempts.
- Persistent upgrades: Various upgrades carry over between runs, adding continuing progression to the roguelike structure.
That combination is the reveal's most interesting gameplay detail. The Unformed gives Guild Wars a repeatable challenge where the skill selection itself becomes part of each attempt, alongside progress that survives beyond an individual run.

The story sends players through the Mists of Tyria.
Players will work alongside the Order of the Moonless Night against the Cult of Odran and its Nightmares. That conflict leads into The Unformed, connecting the story's enemies to Afterlife's main dungeon addition.
PC and mobile launch with a preorder discount
Guild Wars Afterlife is coming to PC and mobile, with a regular price of $29.99. It will be available through Guild Wars Reforged, the enhanced version of the original game.
Reforged continues the original game's return
The announcement follows a renewed stretch of development for Guild Wars. Reforged launched late last year, and another dungeon arrived in April, ahead of Afterlife's reveal.
The longer history makes this release unusual. Eye of the North arrived in August 2007, after which ArenaNet focused much of its attention on Guild Wars 2 while keeping the original game's servers running.
ArenaNet is now developing and supporting three Guild Wars games simultaneously: Guild Wars Reforged, Guild Wars 2, and the action-oriented Guild Wars 3. Afterlife adds to the oldest branch of that lineup.
If the announcement has you returning to the sequel as well, the Guild Wars 2 guide collection covers that side of Tyria.
