Heroes of Might & Magic 3 Steam Launch Missing Game Files

Ubisoft had a genuinely impressive move lined up at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026: announce a full remake of one of the most beloved strategy games ever made, then shadowdrop the original complete edition onto Steam the same night. The execution, however, left something to be desired.

Players who purchased Heroes of Might and Magic III: The Restoration of Erathia on Steam quickly noticed something was off. The download clocked in at just 23.49 KB. That's not a typo. For context, a single high-resolution screenshot is typically larger than that. The only file included in the package was a bare executable with zero actual game content attached to it.

What players actually downloaded

Here's the thing: the classic game has had a rough history on Steam. For years, the only version available was the 2015 HD Edition developed by Dotemu, which covered the base game but left out the expansions entirely. Fans who wanted the complete experience with all expansions had to go to GOG. So when Ubisoft announced it was dropping the full complete edition onto Steam alongside the remake reveal, there was genuine excitement.

That excitement hit a wall fast. A 23.49 KB download is obviously not a complete strategy game from 1999. The community flagged it almost immediately, and the Steam page for the release accumulated a "Mostly Negative" review rating in short order, with players pointing out they had paid for a product that simply did not exist in any playable form.

The issue has since been resolved. A 770 MB update containing the actual game files was pushed approximately 11 hours after the initial release.

Ubisoft's response and the fix

The official Might and Magic account addressed the situation directly: "Thank you to everyone who brought this to our attention. We investigated the issue and can confirm it has now been resolved. We appreciate the community's patience and reports while we worked on a fix and apologize for any inconvenience caused."

The 770 MB patch that followed is what the original download should have been. Players who purchased during the broken window can now actually launch and play the game, which is, to put it plainly, the minimum bar for a successful release.

The bigger picture for the franchise

The botched launch is a frustrating footnote to what should have been a clean moment for the franchise. The remake announcement generated real buzz, and the shadowdrop of the original complete edition was a smart play to let fans revisit the source material while the new version builds anticipation. Shipping a 23 KB placeholder instead of the actual game undercut all of that goodwill in the span of a few hours.

What most players miss in situations like this is that the Steam review score, once it swings negative, tends to linger even after a fix goes live. The "Mostly Negative" label is visible to anyone browsing the store, and casual buyers who don't read patch notes won't know the issue was resolved. That's a real cost to the game's discoverability and first impressions.

The good news is the game itself, once you actually have it, is the complete edition that fans have wanted on Steam for over a decade. If you're jumping in for the first time or returning ahead of the remake, the Heroes of Might and Magic III strategy guides are worth bookmarking before your first campaign.
