Yes, Fallout 4 is still worth playing in 2026. I’ve got 104 hours in it on Steam, which surprised me when I looked, and I last played it in May 2021. It’s going to be running a lot better now than it was running then.
The newest reason to go back is FEVer Dreams, a free quest that came out on 20 October (AllThings.How). It isn’t the thing that would bring me back, though, and that says more about how I play Fallout than about the quest itself.
Is Fallout 4 still worth playing in 2026?
It’s Fallout, so yes. I still remember how often I used to go back to Fallout 2, which was sick, by the way, and I put a lot of hours into Fallout 3 as well. Fallout 4 is definitely worth playing.
Fallout 4 came out in November 2015, and Steam lists the base game at $19.99 (Fallout 4 on Steam). You play the sole survivor of Vault 111, coming out into a world reduced to ash by nuclear war, and you rebuild and reclaim the Wasteland your own way.
The Anniversary Edition bundles the base game with the six official expansions and more than 150 Creation Club items. It reached Switch 2 on 24 February 2026, so there are more ways to play it now than there were when I stopped (Gematsu).
Why do I watch Fallout 4 more than I play it now?
The problem is that I’m now enjoying watching Fallout 4 more than I enjoy playing it. There’s a creator I’ve been watching recently who does a lot of Fallout 4 content, and I’m stuck appreciating what they’re doing. That’s down to the amount of time it would take me to get my own game into the same state. It’s still definitely worth playing.
Why did I stop playing Fallout 4?
Time. I just ran out of time. I play so many games, and around 2021 or early 2022 I started the job I’m in now. My last Fallout 4 session on Steam was in May 2021.
I actually ended up in Fallout 4 because of Cyberpunk 2077. Cyberpunk came out in December 2020, and when I played it, it wasn’t going so well. So I went into Fallout 4, because for me it was essentially the same game: I just wander around building a life.
What is Fallout 4’s FEVer Dreams quest?
FEVer Dreams is a free Creation made by Kinggath Creations in partnership with Bethesda, out on 20 October 2026 for PC, Xbox and PlayStation. Push Square calls it a psychological horror-tinged dungeon crawl with puzzles (Push Square).
The headline is that the original voice actors for both the male and female Sole Survivor are back for it, more than a decade after Fallout 4 launched.
It starts when Private Gutsy approaches you near Home Plate in Diamond City’s market. You end up poisoned with FEV, the only cure is somewhere deeper in the complex, and you’re up against hallucinations of your spouse and a rival ghoul on the way (AllThings.How).
Would FEVer Dreams bring me back to Fallout 4?
I don’t know. A race to find a cure while you’re seeing things makes me think of the creepy dream levels in the original Max Payne, and the pressure that comes with them. I don’t think I play Fallout well against the clock.
I’m an absolute loot goblin in every game. When I last played WoW Forever, I was somewhere around the 98th or 99th percentile for see a node, pick up a node. So the idea of being rushed along wouldn’t work with how relaxed I play.
That shouldn’t stop anyone else, though. It’s free, and it works on a new save or one already in progress, no matter your character level (AllThings.How).
