If you're brand new, play a Hunter. If you're coming back, play what you played the first time. And if you're me, you play a Paladin, every single time.

I've put 30-odd hours into the WoW Forever beta on a Paladin tank, and almost every time I've come back to WoW over the years, I've ended up on one. Here's how I'd pick.

Why Do I Always End Up a Paladin?

Honestly, I don't fully know. When I played as a kid I wasn't a Paladin at all , I did a lot of Mage and other things. I think it comes down to wanting to be lazy with my play.

If I'm geared up as a Paladin tank, I can get away from almost anything. It takes ages to kill stuff, but if I want to dip, I can just run. When you're a Mage, you don't dip.

Which Classes Can Tank in WoW Forever?

More than you'd think , it depends how you build. Some are better suited to it: Warrior and Druid in bear form are the classic options. You can even tank with your pet if you're a Hunter or a Warlock. As long as you've got something that can hold aggro, or pull it back, you can tank with almost anything. Our best tank classes guide breaks down the big three.

Is some stuff objectively easier to tank with? Yeah. I picked Paladin because it fits thematically. I get a sick shield, and I do a lot of reflection damage. My own meter has my Retribution Aura reflecting nearly 3,900 damage since its last reset.

My Paladin's meter: 3,886 damage reflected by Retribution Aura and 8,138 soaked since the last reset.

What Should a Total Newcomer Play?

Something easy: a damage role where you're not too squishy. Hunter is the obvious pick.

As a tank, you need to know what to pull and how to pull it. As a healer, you need to know who to heal and when. Both roles are also harder to level, so a new player gets hit with a grind straight away.

What Should a Returning Classic Player Play?

If you played retail, play the class you played there and see how different it feels in Classic. If you're a nostalgia player like me who did the original WoW, play what you played back then and see if it still feels the same.

For me it feels slightly better now, and I can't put my finger on why.

Is There Any Class to Avoid Right Now?

Not really. I haven't seen anything worth avoiding.

What I would avoid is levelling alone as a healer , I've seen people do it and it looks painfully slow. Levelling a sword-and-board Paladin tank solo takes ages too, but at least it's safe.

Which Class Should You Play in WoW Forever?

I'd say Paladin. But if you've never played before, start with a Hunter and come back to the tank life later.
