WoW Forever Guide: Best Tank Classes

Tanking in World of Warcraft: Forever is not the same as parking your character in front of a boss and watching health bars. Blizzard has specifically designed Forever's dungeon combat to stay tactical, which means Threat is real, crowd control matters, and a bad pull can wipe your group faster than poor gear ever will. Three classes fill the tank role: Protection Warrior, Protection Paladin, and Feral Bear Druid. Each one solves the same problem differently, and picking the right one depends entirely on how you want to control a fight.

How does tanking work in WoW Forever?

Enemies in WoW Forever do not automatically attach to whoever is labeled the tank. You generate Threat, and damage dealers can pull enemies away if they attack too aggressively. Healers attract enemies when a pull goes sideways. Large packs overwhelm tanks who try to handle more than the group can support.

Blizzard has stated clearly that dungeon combat should remain tactical. Abilities like Polymorph, Banish, Fear, and Roots are intended to matter when pulls get too large. Damage dealers are expected to focus targets carefully and hold back on area attacks until Threat is established.

That shifts tanking into something more active than absorbing hits. A good tank thinks about:

  • Threat generation and target priority
  • Positioning and enemy facing
  • Crowd control coordination
  • Interrupt availability across the group
  • Healer Mana before each pull
  • Patrol timing and escape routes
  • Defensive cooldown sequencing

Which tank classes are available in WoW Forever?

Forever deliberately avoids making these three classes interchangeable. Each has distinct strengths, and Blizzard's stated philosophy is to preserve meaningful differences rather than flatten them into the same toolkit with different visual effects.

tip
Final balance is still being tuned as Forever moves through testing. Judge these tanks by their toolkits rather than temporary numbers, which will shift before and after launch.

Protection Warrior

Warrior is the clearest expression of classic sword-and-shield tanking. The entire Protection toolkit exists specifically for the tank role rather than adapting a damage spec into a defensive one.

The core rotation revolves around Shield Slam, Revenge, Thunder Clap, Taunt, and Shield Block, all fueled by Rage. Defensive Stance reinforces everything. Shield Slam remains the 31-point Protection capstone and receives stronger scaling and higher Threat generation than its original Vanilla version.

Forever adds five new Protection talents around that foundation:

  • Master of Defense: generates Rage on dodge or parry while a shield is equipped, connecting successful defense directly to offensive resources
  • Vanguard: allows Charge while in Defensive Stance, removing stance friction at the start of pulls
  • Vitality: increases Strength and Stamina, supporting both durability and Threat
  • Focused Rage: reduces the Rage cost of offensive abilities, improving Threat consistency
  • Bastion: additional Protection reinforcement in the current demo tree

Forever also allows Thunder Clap in Defensive Stance, a significant improvement over the original Vanilla restriction. Shield Block now blocks two attacks by default instead of one, and both Last Stand and Shield Wall receive shorter cooldowns.

How should you play Protection Warrior?

Warrior rewards deliberate pulls. Establish Threat immediately on the most dangerous target, use Shield Slam for focused single-target Threat, and switch to Thunder Clap plus tab-targeting when managing groups. Do not tunnel one enemy while others chase your healer.

Active defense matters here. Your stance, gear, block chance, and cooldown timing all affect how much pressure lands on the healer. Shield Wall and Last Stand are most valuable when layered rather than used simultaneously in a panic.

Strengths: dedicated Taunt, strong single-target Threat, excellent shield interaction, improved Thunder Clap access, reliable cooldowns, clear tank identity.

Weaknesses: more dependent on gear and Rage management, less naturally forgiving against spread packs compared to Paladin's Consecration.

Best for: players who want classic tanking fundamentals, precise control, and a high-skill traditional dungeon experience.

Protection Paladin

Paladin receives the largest single transformation of any tank in Forever. The biggest fix addresses a long-standing problem: Paladin can now properly Taunt.

Blizzard added Seal of Fury as a dedicated tanking seal. While active, normal attacks deal additional damage and generate small absorb shields. When Judged, it deals damage and forces the target back onto the Paladin. This is Judgement of Fury, the Paladin's Taunt. It has a short range and remains tied to the Seal/Judgement system rather than functioning as a generic standalone button, preserving the class's identity while fixing the actual problem.

Consecration becomes baseline at level 20 and deals particularly strong damage and Threat against the first four enemies standing inside it, with reduced effectiveness against additional targets. Place a pack inside it, keep them there, and the ground effect continuously reinforces your control. Positioning matters enormously for Paladin because enemies wandering outside Consecration reduce your advantage.

New Protection Paladin talents in Forever

  • Improved Seal of Fury: restores Mana when Seal-generated absorbs are consumed, connecting survivability and resource management
  • Swift Judgment: periodically resets Judgement, giving Paladin a recovery option if a critical Taunt misses
  • Templar's Bulwark: creates an absorb shield based on maximum health, providing a powerful response to dangerous moments
  • Iron Creed: makes correctly timed Holy Strikes reduce incoming damage while Righteous Fury is active, rewarding active play
  • Holy Shield: remains the Protection capstone, preserving the shield-and-block identity

Paladin also retains strong performance against Undead and Demons specifically, with abilities like Exorcism, Holy Wrath, and Turn Undead remaining part of the toolkit.

Strengths: excellent multi-target Threat, baseline Consecration, real Taunt through Seal of Fury, absorb shields, blocks, strong defensive utility.

Weaknesses: no standard interrupt, fewer slows than other classes, Taunt tied to Seal of Fury rather than a standalone button.

Best for: dungeon packs, AoE Threat, players who enjoy Holy magic and controlled zone positioning.

Feral Bear Druid

Bear Druid tanks through Bear Form rather than a shield, which immediately creates a different defensive profile. Durability comes from high health, armor, and dodge rather than block. Rage fuels abilities just like Warrior, but the toolkit looks different.

Forever significantly expands the Feral tree while keeping Cat and Bear gameplay inside the same path. Key additions:

  • Mangle at tier 4: weapon-based damage and Threat, becomes especially strong during Berserk
  • Natural Reaction: increases dodge chance and generates Rage on dodge, creating the same defense-into-offense loop that Warrior's block talents use
  • Berserk replaces Leader of the Pack as the 31-point Feral capstone: during Berserk, Mangle hits up to three targets, loses its cooldown, and the Druid gains immunity to Fear effects
  • Feral Charge in Bear Form: charges an enemy, immobilizes it, and interrupts spellcasting, giving Druid a direct interrupt tool that Paladin specifically lacks

Frenzied Regeneration is also changed and can restore up to 100% of the Druid's health over its duration, making it a significant self-healing tool during dangerous pulls.

How should you play Feral Bear Druid?

Bear tanking is physical and mobile. Generate Rage by fighting, maintain Threat through Mangle and Swipe, and reposition quickly when needed. Outside combat, the hybrid advantages become apparent: you can heal between pulls, shift to Cat Form, and adapt if the group's needs change. That flexibility makes Druid one of the most practical tanks for players who also spend significant time outside dungeons.

Strengths: high health and armor, strong mobility, Mangle, Berserk for multi-target pressure, Feral Charge interrupt, self-healing, hybrid flexibility.

Weaknesses: no shield means a different defensive feel from Warrior and Paladin, gear evaluation is less intuitive in Leather, and some Feral talents serve Cat rather than Bear.

Best for: players who want tanking combined with open-world flexibility, mobility, and strong hybrid gameplay.

Which WoW Forever tank is best for beginners?

Protection Warrior is the strongest starting point for learning tanking fundamentals. Taunt is a direct response when an enemy leaves you. Rage tells you exactly how many abilities you can use. Shield Block, Thunder Clap, and Shield Slam each have clear purposes. Everything in the toolkit teaches you something about the role.

Protection Paladin can feel easier against packs because Consecration handles part of multi-target Threat automatically, but the Seal/Judgement system and Mana management add different complexity that can confuse new tanks.

Bear Druid is mechanically comfortable but asks you to understand Rage, shapeshifting, and a talent tree that serves two playstyles simultaneously.

For a completely new tank, Warrior delivers the clearest education in traditional tanking. For our full breakdown of every class's new abilities in Forever, see the guide to every class new ability and talent change.

Dungeon tips for WoW Forever tanks

Threat is your first job, not your last

A tank who survives but cannot hold enemies away from the healer is not doing the job. Establish Threat before damage dealers start attacking. Forever is specifically designed around players respecting Threat rather than assuming the tank automatically owns every enemy in the room.

Mark targets when pulls are complicated. Even a simple skull marker can dramatically reduce chaos by telling everyone which enemy dies first.

Use crowd control instead of overpulling

Blizzard has explicitly said crowd control should remain useful in Forever dungeons. Polymorph, Banish, Fear, and Roots are the correct answer when a pull contains more enemies than the group can safely handle. Control two, fight four, then finish the controlled targets. Repeatedly pulling six enemies and blaming the healer is not a strategy.

Position enemies correctly

Keep enemies facing away from the party whenever practical. This protects allies from frontal abilities and keeps positioning predictable for melee damage dealers. Do not spin bosses constantly. Move only when there is a reason.

For casters that refuse to follow you, use line-of-sight positioning. Move behind a wall or pillar. When the caster loses sight of you, it may move closer, pulling scattered enemies into one controlled location.

Layer defensive cooldowns

Using every defensive ability simultaneously the moment health drops is one of the most common beginner mistakes. Use one cooldown when danger begins, use another when the first expires or damage increases, and save your largest emergency tool for a genuine emergency. Warrior's Shield Wall and Last Stand, Paladin's Templar's Bulwark, and Druid's Frenzied Regeneration are all most valuable because of when you use them.

warning
Do not pull the next group while the healer is at low Mana. A tank who waits thirty seconds for the healer to drink will clear the dungeon faster than one who creates repeated wipes by refusing to pause.

Watch the healer, not just your health bar

Newly spawned creatures and patrols frequently target healers because healing generates Threat while the tank has not yet attacked those enemies. If something reaches your healer, react immediately. Taunt it, charge it, or use Judgement of Fury. Do not stay focused on your current target while the healer is being attacked behind you.

Know your pull size

Do not watch a geared group pull half a dungeon and assume your leveling party should do the same. Safe pull size depends on your gear, healer gear, healer Mana, party damage, available interrupts, crowd control, and enemy abilities. Start controlled and increase pull size only when the group demonstrates it can handle more.
