Jagex has cancelled RuneScape Reignited, a proposed new game mode for the long-running MMORPG, less than two weeks after its reveal at RuneFest. The cancellation came via an official blog post and YouTube video from associate creative director Mod Ryan, who cited the sheer volume of player feedback as the deciding factor.
What Reignited was actually supposed to be
RuneScape Reignited was pitched as a fresh-start game mode with a completely separate player economy from existing RuneScape accounts. Reignited characters could only trade with other Reignited accounts, and they were locked out of tackling bosses alongside regular players. The pitch was simple: give newcomers a clean entry point into a game whose economy has become notoriously hostile to fresh characters.
The problem? Veteran players saw it as a slow death sentence for their existing accounts. With Reignited being the natural home for new players, the existing playerbase would have been cut off from new blood, leaving the standard game to stagnate. There was also no migration path. Players who wanted to try Reignited had to abandon their old accounts entirely, potentially walking away from thousands of hours of progress and years of investment.
Why the community pushed back so hard
Here's the thing: the feedback was not just loud, it was specific. Players were not simply resistant to change. They had concrete concerns about what a split economy would mean long-term.
The RuneScape economy is already under serious pressure. A Bond (redeemable for one month of premium membership) currently trades for around 141.3 million coins on the main game. On Old School RuneScape, the same item runs roughly 11.2 million coins. Those numbers tell you everything about the inflation problem Jagex was trying to solve. Reignited would have sidestepped that problem for new players, but it would have done nothing to fix it for the existing community, and it would have drained the pool of players who might have eventually crossed over.
Veteran players also pointed out that Reignited accounts would attract the most engagement from Jagex's content team, since new players need new content pipelines. That raised real fears about where future development resources would flow.
Mod Ryan's statement and what it signals
In his announcement, Mod Ryan said: "We received a ton of different perspectives from all of you, and we truly appreciate everyone sharing their views. It is super important to us because the last time we didn't listen to player feedback, combat changed forever. And it has taken us over a decade to recover from that."
That is a direct and unusually candid acknowledgment from a studio that it has made this kind of mistake before. Jagex pulling the plug this fast, before a single line of Reignited-specific content shipped, suggests the internal read on the feedback was unambiguous.
The economy problem that prompted Reignited still exists, though. Cancelling the mode does not fix the steep barrier facing anyone trying to start RuneScape fresh in 2026. Jagex now has to find a different answer to that question, and the clock is ticking.
What is still coming for RuneScape
RuneScape Reignited was not the only announcement at RuneFest. Mod Ryan confirmed that an Adventure Guide update and additional content are still on track for December, alongside a free trial that could serve as a lighter version of Reignited's new-player ambitions. A RuneScape 4, built as an entirely new MMO, was also revealed at the show and remains in development.
For players already deep in the RuneScape universe through RuneScape: Dragonwilds, the survival crafting spin-off from Jagex, none of this directly affects your current game. The bigger picture here is that Jagex is in an unusual position: a studio that publicly reversed a major decision in under two weeks because players pushed back hard enough. That responsiveness is worth something, even if the underlying problem that inspired Reignited still needs a real solution. Keep an eye on what the December update actually delivers, because that is where Jagex's answer to the new-player problem will start to take shape.
