Insomniac Games dropped a full features trailer for Marvel's Wolverine on August 28, less than three weeks before the game's September 15 PS5 launch, and it packs in a lot. Logan's moveset, progression systems, suit customization, and open-world-adjacent activities are all on the table.
Logan's two upgrade tracks
Here's the thing: Insomniac is running two parallel progression systems, and they work differently. Techniques cover Logan's moveset, the actual combat actions you execute in a fight. Adaptations are a separate DNA-based skill tree that modifies how Logan operates at a deeper level.
The Adaptations tree is where things get interesting. Options include absorbing more bullets before taking damage, widening parry windows, boosting Rage effectiveness, and triggering fear effects on enemies mid-fight. Insomniac says there are dozens of these to tune toward your preferred playstyle, which suggests the system has real depth rather than a handful of obvious picks.
The Rage system was already confirmed before this trailer, but the Adaptations reveal shows it isn't a standalone mechanic. It's one variable in a larger web of modifiers you can stack and adjust.
Suits, whisky, and Nightmare Doors
Outside combat, Marvel's Wolverine is filling its world with collectibles and challenge rooms. Nightmare Doors are scattered across the game and host combat and traversal challenges. Collectible whisky bottles unlock fragments of Logan's forgotten memories. Material crates provide crafting resources for unlocking suits.
The suits themselves pull from comics, movies, and animation, so longtime fans will have plenty to hunt down. Insomniac has done this well before in the Spider-Man games, and there's no reason to expect anything different here.
Villains confirmed in the trailer include Omega Red and Lady Deathstrike, both classic Logan antagonists, which gives some shape to the enemy roster even if the full list isn't out yet.
What this means two weeks out
A features trailer this close to launch usually signals the developer is confident in the product. Insomniac isn't hiding the systems; they're putting them front and center. The Adaptations tree in particular looks like it could add meaningful replayability if the individual modifiers interact well with each other.
The comparison to the Spider-Man games is hard to avoid. Same studio, same PS5 exclusivity, same approach to suits as collectible rewards. Whether that formula translates cleanly to a berserker melee character is the real question, and that answer comes September 15.
