4A Games had one of the stronger State of Play moments today, closing out a brand-new Metro 2039 trailer with the news everyone has been waiting for: the game launches February 4, 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
This is the follow-up to Metro 2033 and the wider Metro series that fans have been tracking closely since the full reveal earlier this year. The February window had been floated in some circles, but seeing the date locked in during a major showcase makes it real.

What the new trailer actually showed
The trailer led with PS5 Pro gameplay, which is notable because most of what players had seen before came from PC preview builds. Here's the thing: the PS5 Pro footage looked sharp. Dense, oppressive environments with the kind of lighting that makes post-apocalyptic tunnels feel genuinely threatening.
Beyond the visual flex, the trailer gave a clearer look at the core gameplay loop. The Stranger, the game's protagonist, navigates a crumbling building, manages his anti-radiation filter (a returning series staple), and then gets into a tense firefight with a squad of heavily armed soldiers. The combat sequence moves room-to-room before spilling outside, mixing gunplay with grenades and throwing knives.
It's a tight slice that shows off both the slower, exploration-heavy pacing Metro is known for and the frantic action that kicks in when things go sideways.
Eight years after Exodus, the series goes darker
Most players know Metro Exodus launched in February 2019. Metro 2039 arrives almost exactly eight years later, and 4A Games has been upfront that this entry goes to darker places than anything the series has done before. The story is set roughly three years after the events of Exodus, and the studio has said the narrative will dig into the consequences of war in ways the previous games didn't fully explore.
The returning Karma system is back too, though 4A has reworked how it functions to tie more directly into those themes. What most players miss in Metro games is how much the Karma system quietly shapes the story, and if the developers are leaning into that more deliberately this time, it could make for some genuinely weighty decisions.
Meanwhile, the hype around the game has been building steadily. Metro 2039 crossed nearly 2 million wishlists globally before today's announcement, and the Gamescom hands-on earlier this summer gave players their first taste of the real thing. The reception there was strong.
February 2027 is getting crowded, but Metro has a shot
A February release puts Metro 2039 in a historically competitive window for action games, but it's also where 4A Games has launched before. Exodus dropped in February 2019 and held up well against the competition that month. The studio clearly knows how to time a release.
