"I bought a Thor because I wanted to play Morrowind on the go, but then started working on a port to use the second screen" -- that's how modder Josh Daniels described falling headfirst into what the Elder Scrolls community has long called the modding curse: you spend more time tinkering than actually playing.

The result of that tinkering is OpenMW-DS, a modification of the open source OpenMW engine that puts The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind into a Nintendo DS-style dual-screen configuration on the AYN Thor Android handheld. Daniels shared a public build on Reddit this week, giving the Morrowind community something genuinely new to play with while The Elder Scrolls 6 continues its long hibernation.

How the mod actually works

Here's the thing: this isn't a PC mod in the traditional sense. OpenMW-DS runs through the OpenMW Android port, which is the key piece that makes the whole setup possible. The AYN Thor runs Android, so the game itself runs through that Android build of OpenMW rather than a desktop client.

The dual-screen element pushes Morrowind's inventory screens, maps, journal, and character stat menus onto the handheld's second display, freeing up the main screen for the actual game world. For a 2002 RPG with notoriously menu-heavy gameplay, that's a genuinely useful quality-of-life change, not just a novelty.

important
A legitimate PC copy of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind is required to run OpenMW-DS. Neither OpenMW nor this mod include the game files themselves.

The installation process isn't described as complex, but it does require some comfort with moving files around on the AYN Thor beforehand. This isn't a plug-and-play situation, which is exactly what Daniels flagged upfront.

A second Morrowind handheld project is also in progress

Separately, another community member going by FirefighterTrick6476 has been working on an actual Nintendo DS port of Morrowind -- as in, running on original DS hardware. The scope there is considerably more ambitious given the hardware constraints of a device from 2004, and the project may never reach a finished state. Still, early footage already shows basic script functions running alongside UI elements for inventory, map, journal, and character stats on the DS's second screen.

Two independent projects chasing similar dual-screen ideas for the same game in the same week is the kind of thing that only happens in a community as active as Morrowind's.

Where this fits in the broader Elder Scrolls moment

The timing is interesting. The Nintendo Switch 2 port of last year's Oblivion Remastered is still on the way, and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been ported to what feels like every platform with a screen. Morrowind, the third mainline entry in the series, has never had that kind of official portable treatment despite a fanbase that has kept it alive through OpenMW for years.

Bethesda's roadmap is packed well into the future, covering Fallout projects and eventually the sixth Elder Scrolls. The community clearly isn't waiting around.

If you already own a copy of Morrowind and an AYN Thor, the OpenMW-DS GitHub page from Josh Daniels has the build and setup guide. For everyone else, it's a reminder of just how far open source preservation work can push a 24-year-old RPG.
