EA Sports dropped a full breakdown of NHL 27's Connected Franchise mode this week, expanding on the reveal trailer that first surfaced on July 16. The short version: this is a full online league builder designed for friend groups who want something more than a casual online match. Coming off NHL 26, this represents a significant step up in the franchise experience.
What the mode actually lets you do
The setup process gives commissioners a surprising amount of control. You pick the league size, configure conferences and divisions, and decide whether to start from default rosters (which EA says will receive updates throughout the year) or build something entirely custom.
Here's the thing that makes the custom roster system stand out: it supports full crossplay sharing. Everyone in your league pulls from the same roster file regardless of whether they're on PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series. That's a real quality-of-life win for mixed-platform friend groups, which is basically every friend group at this point.
Flexible scheduling is also baked in. EA built the mode around the reality that people have jobs, time zones, and lives, so leagues aren't locked into rigid week-by-week deadlines. Unlimited seasons mean a league can theoretically run as long as the group wants to keep it going.
The catch that changes the math
That human-only requirement is the biggest thing to plan around. If someone drops out mid-season, the league stalls. EA hasn't detailed what happens to abandoned teams, and that's a gap worth watching as the mode goes live.
For sports games in general, online franchise modes have historically struggled with retention. Getting 10 to 30 people to commit to a full season is genuinely hard, and EA seems aware of this, which is why the flexible scheduling exists in the first place.
EA's long-term pitch
EA is framing Year 1 as a foundation, not a finished product. The studio says it wants direct feedback from players on which commissioner tools matter most, where friction exists, and what features to build next. That kind of community-driven roadmap language can mean a lot or very little depending on how seriously a studio follows through.
The goal for this first year, as EA describes it, is to make the experience of playing with friends as smooth as possible: quick league setup, trade discussions, and head-to-head matchups without unnecessary friction. The ambition for future years is a richer, more flexible version of the mode built on what players actually ask for.
