miHoYo has officially pulled back the curtain on Nodusfall, a dark fantasy co-op action game that looks nothing like the anime-inflected live-service titles the studio built its reputation on. Revealed at Gamescom Opening Night Live 2026, this is the same developer behind Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail taking a hard left turn toward something far grittier. If you've been following Notmads and other co-op action games in this space, Nodusfall is worth keeping on your radar.

What miHoYo is actually building here

The pitch is straightforward: pick a character class called a Weaver, build out your loadout, and squad up with other players to hunt corrupted beasts and strip them of resources. The official site specifically calls out the ability to "switch roles and loadouts at will," which hints at a fluid team composition system rather than locking you into a single playstyle for an entire session.

Combat leans aggressive. Players are expected to exploit enemy vulnerabilities, chain pressure attacks, and land decisive finishers to maximize loot drops. Defeated enemies yield upgrade materials for weapons and abilities, feeding the classic loop of beating harder content to unlock the tools needed to beat even harder content. The Monster Hunter comparison writes itself, but the Elden Ring influence shows up in the darker tone and the emphasis on learning enemy patterns before you can punish them.

The world itself is called a continent fractured by entities known as the Dreadnodi, mysterious beings that have spread corruption across regions and warped native creatures into dangerous threats. Players take on the role of Weavers tasked with hunting those beasts, tracing the Dreadnodi back to their source, and recovering fragments of divinity to stabilize the world. The official lore text frames it as a cosmic mystery: a divine messenger who fell to the mortal realm before being fully awakened, setting off a journey that the game will presumably unpack over time.

Free to play, but not a gacha

Here's the thing that will matter most to anyone who has spent time with miHoYo's previous titles: Nodusfall is free to play, but it is not a gacha game. Characters are earned through gameplay, not randomized pulls. The studio has confirmed it is still working out the full monetization structure, but the current direction points toward cosmetic sales rather than character acquisition mechanics tied to random draws.

That is a meaningful departure from Genshin Impact's model, where pulling for new characters sits at the center of the entire economy. Whether the cosmetic shop ends up being reasonably priced or aggressively monetized is a question that won't be answered until the game gets closer to launch, but the baseline commitment to non-random character acquisition is a good sign.

Platforms, release window, and the beta situation

No release date has been set. No platforms have been officially confirmed either, though miHoYo's track record makes a PC and PS5 launch likely, with Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 potentially following later. The studio has multiple other projects in active development, including Petit Planet and Honkai: Nexus Anima, so Nodusfall is not arriving soon.

A beta is confirmed to be in the pipeline, with pre-registration already open on the official Nodusfall site. No dates have been attached to it yet, but getting on the list now puts you in position when invites go out.

For players who want to track the genre more broadly, the gaming guides hub is a good place to keep tabs on co-op action releases as they develop. Nodusfall is still early enough that the most useful thing you can do right now is pre-register and wait for miHoYo to show more of the actual systems in motion.
