PlayStation and LEGO Reveal Official PS1 Set Launching This December

"For the first time, players and LEGO fans will be able to create a LEGO replica of the original PlayStation console and PlayStation controller," reads the official PlayStation blog post from today's State of Play. That quote does not oversell it.

PlayStation and the LEGO Group have made it official: a LEGO set based on the original PlayStation console is coming this fall, and it's more detailed than anyone probably expected when the leak surfaced earlier this year.

What's actually in the box

Set number 72306 clocks in at 1,911 pieces and builds to a near 1:1 scale replica of the original PlayStation console. Fully assembled, it measures 10.5 inches (26 cm) wide. The controller plugs directly into the console, the Power and Open buttons are functional, and both game dioramas can be removed and displayed separately.

Here's the thing: this isn't just a static display model. The set includes two game dioramas tied to iconic PS1 launch-era titles, and each one has its own interactive elements.

Gran Turismo and Ape Escape get the diorama treatment

The two games represented are Gran Turismo and Ape Escape, which is a genuinely good call for anyone who remembers what those early PlayStation years felt like.

The Gran Turismo diorama includes a miniature track with scaled-down cars. The Ape Escape diorama goes for nostalgia hard, building out an island scene complete with a monkey wearing a helmet that has a swappable blue or red light. Small detail, but it's exactly the kind of thing that makes a display piece worth keeping on a shelf.

tip
Both dioramas feature customizable elements and can be detached from the main console build for standalone display.

When you can actually buy it

The rollout is staggered, so mark the right date depending on where you're shopping.

  • October 1, 2026: Available on direct.playstation.com in the U.S., U.K., France, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and Portugal
  • October 1, 2026: LEGO Insiders Early Access via LEGO.com
  • October 4, 2026: General availability through LEGO.com and physical LEGO Stores worldwide

The price is $179.99 USD. For a nearly 2,000-piece licensed set with this level of detail, that sits in a reasonable range compared to other LEGO Icons-tier releases.

How this fits into LEGO's gaming push

LEGO has been leaning into gaming collaborations hard over the past few years, from Fortnite crossovers to the upcoming LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight pre-order bonuses that have already generated serious interest. A PlayStation 1 set is a different kind of product though. It's not tied to an active game or a live service. It's a collectible aimed squarely at people who grew up with that grey box under their TV in the mid-to-late 90s.

PlayStation is also framing this as a 30-plus year celebration of the brand, which tracks given the original console launched in North America in 1995. The set's attention to PS1-specific details, from the controller port to the disc tray mechanism, suggests this was built for fans who actually remember the hardware, not just the brand name.
