Yes. Project Zomboid is worth it solo for the same reason 7 Days to Die is: there's no tension if your friends are there. If you suddenly die and your friend starts laughing at you, or you panic because a zombie is chasing you around the house, the tension is gone. It's evaporated by you being jovial with your pals.
I've put 51 hours into it on Steam, most recently in August, and I play it alone. It's $24.99 on Steam, where it's rated Very Positive, with 94% of more than 487,000 reviews positive as of 9 October 2026.
Is Project Zomboid Worth It Solo in 2026?
Yes, and solo is where the tension lives. The game's own tagline is "This is how you died", and on your own, that death is something to panic about. With friends around, it's something to laugh at.
It's the same reason I gave for 7 Days to Die solo: with friends, all the tension evaporates. Both games are at their best when it's just you and the zombies.
What's Changed in Project Zomboid for 2026?
Build 42. It went stable in July 2026 with Build 42.20, per The Indie Stone's release post, and the current version is Build 42.21. games.gg has a full rundown of everything new in Build 42.
It's also bigger than ever. The Build 42 update sent it to a new Steam record, and SteamCharts shows an all-time peak of 124,506 players and a 24-hour peak of 62,265 on 9 October, per SteamCharts.
What's My Best Solo Moment in Project Zomboid?
One of the times I jumped out of a broken window, didn't scratch myself, and ran away from the zombies. That's rarer than it should be.
More often than not, when the zombies storm my house and I jump out of the window to get away, I get caught by the zombies and scratch my hand too. Then I slowly die from the wound. That's why the clean escape is my best moment: it almost never happens.
Why Does Jumping Out of a Window Kill You in Project Zomboid?
Because of the glass. If you smash a window and leave the glass in the frame, climbing through it can cut you, per the Project Zomboid wiki. To stop that, equip a weapon and right-click the frame to clear the glass before you need it as an exit.
Height matters too. Climbing out above the ground floor without a sheet rope risks deep wounds and fractures, and a fall of more than three storeys is always fatal, per the wiki's health page.
The slow death isn't always the zombie virus. Sometimes it's just a dirty wound you didn't bother to clean.
Where Should You Base in Project Zomboid Solo?
I don't really know, and I don't plan it. It always depends on the vibes , which I know sounds douchey. I gave myself a douche chill saying that. But depending on where I spawn, if there's something close enough that seems viable, I'll just go there.
I'm not searching for a specific location every time, and maybe that's why I don't do as well as some of the streamers I watch play it. I don't try to min-max the start. For me, it's more a case of: can I get to that building in time before I die?
How Do You Survive Longer in Project Zomboid Solo?
The things that keep killing me all have known fixes, per the wiki. Here's what actually makes the difference:
- Clear the glass from any window you plan to escape through before you need it
- Make a sheet rope if your base is upstairs, so you're not forced to drop from height
- Disinfect and bandage any wound straight away so an ordinary infection doesn't finish the job
Those come from reading up, not from me actually doing them , as you can probably tell from my window record. But they're the difference between a scratch being a scare and a scratch being the end of the run, and solo, there's nobody to patch you up but you.
