"We have an arc for Spencer in Requiem, you kind of understand that more, and then in the DLC you'll understand it even further," said Haris Orkin, the screenwriter behind Resident Evil Requiem, before catching himself mid-sentence: "I probably shouldn't say that, but yeah!"
That candid slip, made during a panel appearance at Meadowlark Comic Con, is the clearest signal yet that the game's story expansion has a very specific focus. Spencer's arc isn't just a subplot being wrapped up. It's the centrepiece.
Spencer's role in Requiem and why it matters
Oswell E. Spencer has loomed over the Resident Evil series since the very beginning. As co-founder of the Umbrella Corporation, he's the architect of practically every catastrophe the series has ever put its protagonists through. Requiem gives him more screen time and texture than any previous entry, pulling back the curtain on his motivations in ways that reframe the series' entire history.
Here's the thing: that extra depth is exactly what makes Orkin's comment so significant. If the base game already pushed Spencer's characterisation further than fans expected, the DLC apparently goes further still.
What Capcom has said about the expansion
Director Koshi Nakanishi addressed the expansion publicly, stating: "In this story, we will dive deeper into the world of Requiem. We're hard at work on it now. It will take some time, so we ask for your patience and hope you'll look forward to it."
No release window has been given. The phrasing "it will take some time" is doing a lot of heavy lifting there, so don't expect an imminent drop. What's clear is that Capcom is treating this as a substantial story addition rather than a cosmetic or combat-focused content pack.
The Spencer Mansion theory gets new fuel
Long before Orkin's comment, well-known Resident Evil data miner and leaker Dusk Golem had floated the idea that Spencer Mansion, the iconic setting from the original 1996 game, was at some point planned for inclusion in Requiem. The theory was that it may have been cut from the base game and could resurface as DLC.
Orkin's words don't confirm that directly. But they do add weight to the idea that Spencer's DLC presence goes beyond a few extra cutscenes. A return to the Mansion would be one of the most fan-servicey moves Capcom could make, and the franchise's 30th anniversary context gives them every reason to lean into that nostalgia.
What this signals for the DLC's scope
Capcom's story expansions for recent Resident Evil entries have ranged from tight, focused add-ons to full-length chapters that recontextualise the main game. Given Nakanishi's language and Orkin's enthusiasm, this one sounds closer to the latter.
The key here is that Orkin is a screenwriter, not a level designer or producer. His excitement about Spencer's arc being extended suggests the DLC is story-led in a meaningful way, not just a new area with recycled enemy types bolted onto a thin narrative justification.
For players still working through the base game, our in-depth review of Resident Evil Requiem breaks down exactly what makes Spencer's portrayal in the main campaign worth paying attention to before the expansion lands.
