Nine years after launch, Middle-earth: Shadow of War is still one of the most replayable action RPGs ever made. And right now, you can grab the full Definitive Edition, including every piece of DLC, for approximately $4.79 on Fanatical. That's a 92% discount on a Steam key that covers the complete package.

Shadow of War built on the foundation of Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and pushed almost everything further. The Arkham-style combat got faster and more brutal, the world expanded across multiple regions, and the Nemesis System, already the standout feature of the first game, became the entire beating heart of the sequel.

What the Nemesis System actually does to you

Here's the thing: most open-world games give you a map full of objectives. Shadow of War gives you a map full of enemies that remember you personally. Orc captains track your history with them. Kill one and he might come back scarred and furious. Get killed by one and he gets promoted, grows stronger, and starts taunting you the next time you cross paths. It creates stories the game never scripted.

The goal throughout is to build your own army by dominating or converting enemy captains, then use that army to siege and capture fortresses region by region. On paper it sounds repetitive. In practice, the randomized captain traits keep it genuinely unpredictable. Some captains can't be vaulted over. Some are immune to ranged attacks. Some will betray you the moment your back is turned, after you spent an hour carefully converting them.

That last part is not a hypothetical.

What 300-plus hours of a single-player game tells you

Shadow of War is the kind of game that sounds like it should get old. Assault fortress, dominate orcs, repeat. But the Nemesis System generates enough friction and personality that the loop stays fresh far longer than it has any right to. The adventure games genre has produced few systems as genuinely reactive as this one.

The combat itself rewards aggression. Talion moves fluidly between sword strikes, ranged ghost shots, and brutal executions, and the animation quality still holds up. What changes as you progress is the enemy composition. Standard orc fodder is practice. Captains are the actual game, and each one is a small puzzle built from randomized strengths and weaknesses.

The deal and what it covers

The Definitive Edition on Fanatical comes as a Steam key at approximately $4.79, down from the standard price. For context, the base game alone has historically sold for around $60 at launch. Getting the complete package, with both story expansions and all Nemesis content, for under $5 is the kind of discount that doesn't need much analysis.

The two story DLCs, Blade of Galadriel and Desolation of Mordor, add separate protagonists and new regions. They're not as long as the main campaign but they fill in corners of the story and give the Nemesis System new contexts to operate in.

Pro tip: If you're new to the series, the original Shadow of Mordor is worth playing first for the story setup, but Shadow of War works fine as a standalone experience. The Nemesis System will do most of the narrative heavy lifting anyway.

For players who want to get the most out of the Definitive Edition before jumping in, the Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor strategy guides cover the core mechanics that carry over into Shadow of War, including how the Nemesis System works at a foundational level.
