Splinterlands, the blockchain trading card game, is rolling out major changes to its Voucher system on August 15th. The overhaul simplifies the in-game economy and removes barriers for new players while shifting how rewards flow through the game.

What is Splinterlands?

Splinterlands is a browser-based trading card game built on the Hive blockchain with play-to-earn mechanics. The game uses Dark Energy Crystals (DEC) as its primary currency and Splintershards (SPS) as a governance token. Gameplay combines deck-building strategy with auto-battler combat.

Players assemble combat lineups based on match conditions, then watch their teams battle automatically until one side wins. Victories earn Glint currency, paid out at the end of each two-week season and spendable on cards and items. The top 50 players each season also receive DEC token payouts.

Overview of the changes

The Voucher system rework follows a community proposal that passed in July. Starting August 15th, the changes include:

  1. Direct reward integration: Voucher rewards from Validator and SPS staking now feed directly into the in-game economy. Players no longer need separate transactions to convert these rewards.
  2. Trading restrictions: Vouchers can no longer be traded on decentralized exchanges like Tribaldex and Hive Engine. All trading moves inside the game environment to simplify compliance and centralize activity.
  3. DEC utility expansion: Voucher-based discounts for Validator licenses are being phased out, giving DEC a larger role in the economy. Players have until August 31st to spend Vouchers on certain purchases before this window closes.
  4. September 3rd updates: A second wave of changes arrives September 3rd, including an in-game DEC/Voucher liquidity pool, a new Voucher Store, and a burn tax on Voucher transfers. The Splinterstorm Skin Shop also closes on this date.

Future developments and community engagement

Splinterlands is running multiple community polls to shape upcoming updates. Topics under discussion include win trading policies, tournament formats, and entry fee structures. The polling reflects the team's approach to letting players steer the game's direction.

Expansion of game content for Rebellion set

The Rebellion set expands on August 15th alongside the Voucher changes. The expansion adds 43 new cards with fresh abilities. Players who own Chaos Legion soulbound reward cards can now unbind them to make them tradeable.

Final thoughts

The Voucher system overhaul consolidates Splinterlands' economy into a more coherent structure. Integrating rewards directly into gameplay and restricting external trading reduces friction for players who just want to collect cards and climb ranks.

Community input continues to drive the game's roadmap. Players can participate in active polls and discussions to influence future updates. For more on Splinterlands mechanics and strategy, check out our comprehensive guides and news coverage.
