Unreleased Star Wars Comedy Acknowledged by Lucasfilm for the First Time in Over a Decade

Somewhere in a Lucasfilm vault, 26 finished episodes of an animated Star Wars comedy have been collecting dust since 2012. That wait is finally over.

Star Wars: Detours, the long-shelved animated comedy conceived by Seth Green, is getting its public debut at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles. The announcement came during San Diego Comic-Con's "Inside the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art" panel, where Green himself confirmed a curated selection of episodes will be on display when the museum opens on September 22.

What Detours actually is

Green described the show's premise simply: "He wanted to make Simpsons in the Star Wars universe." That "he" is George Lucas himself, who developed the series alongside Green. The show was set in the gap between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, focusing on the mundane, everyday side of a galaxy that usually only shows up for lightsaber duels and Death Star runs.

The guest cast alone tells you how serious this thing was. Anthony Edwards, Ahmed Best, Billy Dee Williams, and Lucas himself all contributed voices, alongside a heavy contingent of Robot Chicken alumni. Green has history with Star Wars comedy through Robot Chicken and the Family Guy specials, so this was very much his wheelhouse.

Here's the thing: this wasn't some half-finished pilot. All 26 episodes were completed before the project was quietly shelved.

Why it disappeared for over a decade

The timing is what killed it. Detours was announced in 2012, which put it on a collision course with Disney's acquisition of Lucasfilm and the incoming sequel trilogy. Attention shifted hard toward The Force Awakens, and a comedic cartoon about Jawas and Jedis doing mundane things wasn't exactly the priority.

Green was candid earlier this year about the streaming revival prospects, explaining that the show would need significant editing and technical upgrades to meet current streaming standards. "I just don't think they're willing to commit the spend to update and release this when they can't see a clear benefit," he said at the time. The museum premiere sidesteps that problem entirely by presenting it as a curated exhibition rather than a full streaming rollout.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opens in Los Angeles on September 22. Detours episodes will be part of the museum's permanent collection of narrative art and storytelling artifacts.

What this means for fans who've waited

For Star Wars fans, this is a bittersweet win. Getting to see Detours at all is more than most people expected, and Green clearly has genuine affection for the project. "It was literally one of the greatest experiences I think I've ever had," he told the SDCC panel audience.

The museum format does limit the audience, though. You'll need to visit Los Angeles in person to catch these episodes, which is a very different proposition than a Disney Plus drop. Whether this eventually leads to a wider release is unclear, but at minimum it means Detours is no longer locked away entirely.

Green's involvement in the Star Wars universe runs deep beyond Detours. He voiced characters across The Bad Batch and Star Wars Rebels, so his connection to the franchise never really went away even while his comedy series sat in limbo.

The Star Wars franchise has been particularly active in gaming crossovers lately. If you want to see where the galaxy far, far away has been showing up in games, the full Fortnite x Star Wars May 2026 roadmap breaks down every Clone Wars skin and event that dropped this year. For players still grinding Star Wars content in Fortnite, the Unleash the Force quests and free rewards guide covers every cosmetic you can still earn across the three Star Wars game modes.

September 22 is the date to mark. For anyone near Los Angeles, the Lucas Museum is shaping up to be a genuine destination for Star Wars material that never made it to screens anywhere else. Check our gaming guides for more Star Wars gaming coverage as the museum opening approaches.
