Don't expect to kill fish in Subnautica 2, says Unknown Worlds

Unknown Worlds has made it clear: killing fish won't be patched into Subnautica 2. The studio wants players to coexist with alien sea life, not conquer it.

If you've been waiting for a patch that lets you pull out a knife and start hunting the alien sea life in Subnautica 2, Unknown Worlds has a clear answer for you: don't hold your breath.

Since the game's early access launch last week, a vocal portion of the playerbase has pushed back against the inability to outright kill wildlife. The devs aren't budging.

The philosophy behind the no-kill rule

Anthony Gallegos, gameplay design lead at Unknown Worlds, put it plainly in an interview with PC Gamer ahead of launch: "The tone of the game we're making is that you are here to exist on this planet, not to dominate it. You're not the conquering colonist here. The goal here is not for you to master the world and bend it to your will."

That's not a PR line. It's a design decision baked into the foundation of what Subnautica 2 is trying to be, and the studio has been consistent about it even as complaints have mounted online.

How Subnautica 1's leviathans became a lesson

Here's the thing: this stance comes directly from watching what happened in the original game. Scott MacDonald, Unknown Worlds creative media producer, explained that the studio set leviathan health bars extremely high in Subnautica 1, assuming players wouldn't bother trying to kill them. They left those health bars visible.

Predictably, the community treated those numbers as a challenge.

"We set the health bars to be so high, we thought no one's gonna bother killing them or anything like that," MacDonald said. "And then what happens is the community takes it as a challenge, right?"

Players who put in the effort to kill leviathans then systematically cleared the oceans of every threat, draining the game of its tension entirely. What was designed to be a world of coexistence became a cleanup operation.

"You do the work of killing Leviathan and now it's perfectly safe. But you also end up robbing the game of its tension," Gallegos said. "To us, minor decisions like that have major impacts."

What you can actually do against hostile sea life

This doesn't mean you're completely defenseless. Subnautica 2 gives players a few options when predators get too close:

  • Flares can be crafted and thrown to distract ocean predators
  • The Sonic Resonator, the game's resource-harvesting tool, doubles as a way to repel sea creatures more forcefully
  • Smaller fish can be caught, cooked for food, or used as fuel in a bioreactor

What you can't do is kill them outright. The line the studio is drawing is specifically about that predator-prey dynamic, and keeping leviathans as a persistent presence in the world.

"Making sure the leviathans are always kind of present reinforces the idea that you're not the master of this world," Gallegos said. "You're really meant to coexist with them in a way that, I think, was always the goal of the original Subnautica as well."

Unknown Worlds co-founder Charlie Cleveland was reportedly always uncomfortable watching players use the original game's tools to systematically kill creatures, which helped shape this harder stance in the sequel.

Where this leaves players who want combat

The studio's response to players demanding lethality has been direct. Unknown Worlds has pointed those players toward other survival games that offer the kind of combat sandbox they're looking for, with Sons of the Forest cited as one example.

For everyone else, the alien sea life of planet Zazura is something to learn, fear, and eventually navigate around, not eliminate. That tension is the point. Subnautica 2 is, as the developers have described it, an exploration game first, and that framing means the ocean's apex predators need to stay apex.

If you want a full rundown of what the early access build includes alongside this philosophy, the Subnautica 2 new features confirmed for early access guide covers everything from the new planet Zazura to 4-player co-op and the Tadpole vehicle. For players still getting their sea legs, the Subnautica 2 beginner survival tips break down how to manage oxygen, inventory, and those very creatures you won't be killing anytime soon.
