The stars of the next Spider-Man film aren't just promoting the franchise on screen. Tom Holland and Zendaya have gone on record saying they genuinely love Insomniac Games' Spider-Man series, and now the studio wants to meet them in person.
During a promotional interview for Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the pair were asked whether Insomniac's games served as inspiration for any sequences in the upcoming film. They didn't give a direct answer on that front, but what they did say was more interesting. Holland called the games "absolutely sensational." Zendaya, meanwhile, admitted she gets frustrated playing them because she wants to go solo but Holland keeps trying to step in and help.
The Scream section that broke Zendaya
The most specific detail to come out of the interview involves Marvel's Spider-Man 2. In the back half of that game, Mary Jane Watson gets overtaken by a symbiote and transforms into Scream, a villainous monster. It's one of the more demanding sections in the game, and Zendaya confirmed she hit a wall there. Holland ended up stepping in to help her through it, which tracks with his earlier comment about trying to assist when she gets stuck.
It's a genuinely funny image: the guy who plays Peter Parker on screen, bailing out his co-star on a section where Mary Jane goes full symbiote villain.
This isn't Holland's first time talking up the games
Holland has been vocal about his appreciation for Insomniac's work for years. Back in 2021 during the Spider-Man: No Way Home press run, he mentioned that Sony gave him a PS5 and he got deep into the games. He went further and claimed the film's team actually lifted a specific move directly from the game: the moment where Peter Parker uses his webs to flip Green Goblin through the air before slamming him into the ground. Fans have been pointing to that sequence as the likely candidate ever since.
That's a meaningful connection. Most celebrity endorsements of games are surface-level, but a specific move making it into a major blockbuster suggests the creative team was paying close attention.
Insomniac extends the invitation
After the Brand New Day interview made the rounds, Insomniac Games responded on social media by officially inviting Holland and Zendaya to visit the studio. Whether the visit actually happens is still unknown, but the timing is notable. Insomniac is adding a free Brand New Day suit to Marvel's Spider-Man 2 next month, so a studio visit would be a natural promotional tie-in for both sides.
The film hits cinemas on July 31. If the suit drops around the same window, expect Insomniac and Sony to make some noise about it.
For players who want to get caught up before the new suit arrives, the Marvel's Spider-Man 2 guide collection has everything from story walkthroughs to suit unlocks. And if you're jumping into other games in the meantime, the full gaming guides hub has you covered across the board.
