Until Dawn 2 Gets Release Date and Second Trailer at State of Play

Back in June, Firesprite dropped a short but memorable reveal trailer for Until Dawn 2 at PlayStation's summer State of Play. It was brief, atmospheric, and left a lot of questions unanswered. Today, at Sony's September State of Play, the studio came back with a proper second look, and this time they brought a release date with them.

Until Dawn 2 launches on PS5 on January 28, 2027. Pre-orders open September 10.

What the new trailer actually shows

The June reveal was mostly mood. This one has substance. The new trailer confirms the game's premise: a group of young ghost hunters who run a supernatural content channel travel to an abandoned island to film what they expect to be their biggest episode yet. The catch is that their previous scary content was entirely staged. They've never faced anything real.

That setup flips the formula in an interesting direction. These aren't teenagers stumbling into a cabin. They're people who've built careers faking fear, now dropped somewhere that makes that fear very real. The island turns out to hold a centuries-old secret tied to ghosts and what sounds like a cycle of supernatural revenge.

The footage highlights noticeably detailed facial animations, which matters a lot in a game where reading character reactions is part of how the tension works. Neil Newbon, known for his performance work in Baldur's Gate 3, is among the cast.

The branching narrative and deadly choices that defined the original are clearly still the core of the experience. The trailer teases moments where player decisions look like they'll determine who survives, which is exactly what fans of the series want to see.

tip
The game is set on Akishima Island, a location distinct from the original's Blackwood Mountain. Firesprite appears to be building a new setting with its own mythology rather than revisiting familiar ground.

Pre-order bonuses and deluxe edition details

Firesprite and Sony have laid out two tiers for players who want to commit early.

Standard pre-orders include:

  • An "Until Dawn classic" outfit
  • Akishima Island holiday outfit
  • Collectible Dr. Hill bobbleheads hidden throughout the game

The deluxe edition adds:

  • Y2K-inspired outfits for the full cast
  • A "Diorama of Death" feature that lets players revisit every fatal outcome from unique camera angles

That last one is a genuinely clever addition for a game built around mortality and consequence. If you're the type who wants to see every possible way things can go wrong, the deluxe edition is designed with you in mind.

Where this fits in Sony's early 2027 slate

January 28 puts Until Dawn 2 at the front of what's shaping up to be a strong start to 2027 for PS5. God of War Laufey is set to arrive less than a month later, and speculation around Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet potentially landing in the second half of the year has been building. Sony is clearly positioning Until Dawn 2 as a proper launch window title rather than a filler release.

For fans of adventure games with horror elements and narrative weight, the January window makes sense. There's not a lot competing for that space on PS5 right now, and Until Dawn has a dedicated audience that's been waiting since the original game to see what a proper sequel looks like.

Here's the thing: the original Until Dawn punched well above its expectations when it launched. It built a reputation through word of mouth, streaming, and the kind of group viewing experience that horror games rarely manage to pull off. A sequel with a new cast, a new setting, and Firesprite's technical polish behind it has real potential to do the same thing again.

Pre-orders go live September 10. If you want a head start on the lore and mechanics before January, the Until Dawn guide collection is a solid place to get up to speed on what made the original work.
