Valheim 1.0 Update Goes Live After Five Years in Early Access

Five years of Early Access came to an end today when Iron Gate Studio pushed Valheim 1.0 live at 6 AM PDT on September 9, 2026. The studio described the update as containing more than two biomes' worth of new content , and based on the Steam numbers alone, players clearly agree it was worth the wait.

Steam peaked at 116,000 concurrent players in the 24 hours following launch. The day before? Around 26,000. That kind of jump doesn't happen for a routine patch. It happens when a game earns it.

What five years of Early Access actually built

Valheim entered Early Access on February 2, 2021, and the 1.0 release completes the game's full biome progression. The Deep North sits at the top of the map, filling out the northernmost stretch that players have been sailing toward since the Meadows. Iron Gate calls it a massive, snow-covered region of dense frozen forests and abandoned villages where the ghosts of former inhabitants still wander.

Two dungeon types anchor the exploration loop. The Winding Tunnels open through large village houses, while the Gates of Mörkhalla sit inside fortress structures and require a key to enter. New enemies include Gammeltrolls, the Elaking, Eyeless Ones, and the Shapeless Pulp. Tamable Seals and rideable Moose round out the wildlife, because of course they do.

The new metal tier is Bloodgold, smelted from Petrified Tissue, and Timberwood covers the wood tier. A full Nord-tier weapon set covers every class. Traversal gets two new tools: a Grappling Hook carried over from the Mistlands and a Shovel for clearing deep snow drifts. Getting to the biome requires a longship and Ember Charges to break the ice sheets along the shore, so preparation matters before you head north.

The full scope of what dropped today

Here's the thing , the Deep North is just the headline. The actual content list is enormous.

  • 40+ new weapons, including new bombs and ammunition types
  • 4 new armor sets, plus capes, trinkets, and tools
  • 10+ new creatures and 20 new food items
  • 80+ new buildable pieces and fresh crafting mechanics
  • New achievements, locations, music, and in-game events

Alongside all of that, Iron Gate ran a major optimization pass. The Unity engine received an upgrade, the menu got a full overhaul, a Magica cloth system was added, draw distance now has a dedicated graphics setting, enemy spawn chances were rebalanced, and all hair and beard styles are available from character creation.

New platforms and crossplay on day one

The 1.0 release isn't just a content drop. PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 both launched with the game today, joining PC (Steam, Linux, Mac), Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Game Pass. Full crossplay is confirmed across every platform, so PC players can share worlds with console friends.

The update itself weighs around 4.3 GB, which is modest given the volume of content. Mod support continues post-launch, though players should note that BepInEx mods and crossplay cannot run on the same server simultaneously. Console clients can't install those mods, so keep modded servers Steam-only.

What this launch actually signals

A lot of Early Access games reach 1.0 with a quiet patch and a version number change. Valheim's approach is the opposite. Iron Gate spent five years building out every biome, and the final one landed as a full content release rather than a formality. The player count reaction confirms what the patch notes suggest: this is a completed game, not a graduation ceremony.

For players returning after a long break or jumping in for the first time, the Valheim guides collection covers everything from biome progression to boss prep. There's a lot to navigate before you reach the Deep North, and having the full progression mapped out will save you significant time getting there.
