The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition revealed for Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch, out today

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North Legacy Edition has shadow dropped today, August 11, 2026, and is available right now across all platforms with no prior warning.

This is the kind of release nobody saw coming. One day the game just exists, fully playable, expanding on the original War in the North with new story content rooted deep in Tolkien's legendarium. If you were a fan of the original co-op action RPG from Snowblind Studios, this one is worth paying attention to.

The untold story of Agandaûr

The Legacy Edition centers on the "untold story of Agandaûr," a Black Númenórean and servant of Sauron who has assembled a massive force in the ruins of Fornost. That sets the stage for why a new Fellowship is needed in the North, running parallel to Frodo and Samwise beginning their journey toward Mount Doom. Here's the thing: the original War in the North always worked best when it leaned into corners of Middle-earth that the films never touched, and this expansion picks up exactly that thread.

Iconic characters like Aragorn, Gandalf, and Elrond appear alongside locations including Rivendell, Lórien, the Lonely Mountain, and Mirkwood. So there is genuine fan service here, but it is built around an original narrative rather than just retelling scenes you already know.

Three heroes, one fellowship

Players can switch between three playable characters, each with a distinct role. Eradan is a Dúnedain Ranger built around stealth and ranged precision. Andriel is an Elven Loremaster who handles healing and area-of-effect magic. Farin is a Dwarven Champion designed to absorb punishment and deal heavy melee damage. Each has a unique skill tree, and the gear and weapons you find throughout the game will shape how each character develops.

The three-player co-op supports both online and split-screen play, which is a detail worth noting in 2026 when split-screen is increasingly rare. You can also summon Belaram, a Great Eagle, to strike from above during combat.

tip
The Legacy Edition is available now on all platforms. No separate purchase or season pass has been announced at the time of writing.

What this means for fans of Middle-earth games

War in the North has always occupied a specific niche in the Middle-earth game catalog. It sits alongside The Lord of the Rings: The Battle for Middle-earth II as one of the more ambitious licensed games that went beyond adapting the films directly. Both games tried to tell stories the films left on the table, and both found audiences because of it.

The Legacy Edition is a direct extension of that approach. Shadow dropping it suggests confidence in the product, or at least a desire to let word-of-mouth do the work rather than building hype that might not land. Either way, it is playable right now.

For players who want to dig deeper into strategy games set in Middle-earth or adjacent fantasy worlds, or who want guides to help navigate the Legacy Edition's skill systems as more content drops, the gaming guides hub is worth bookmarking.
