Once Human Tech Tree Overhaul: What Changed and What to Do Now
Once Human's latest patch rewired the tech tree and wiped specializations. Here's what changed and how to adapt fast.

Once Human has always rewarded players who think carefully about their character setup, but the version 2.3.6 update on April 8, 2026 reshuffled the deck in a big way. The Tech system overhaul completely removed level-gated unlocks and replaced them with exploration-driven progression, which means your build choices now start mattering from the first hour rather than after a long grind. Whether you are pushing boss content, surviving PvP encounters in RaidZone, or just trying to stay efficient as a solo explorer, the right build makes the difference between dominating and constantly respawning.
The old Tech system handed out abilities based on your level and scenario phase. The new one, introduced in the version 2.3.6 update, is built around four core branches: Survival, Production, Combat, and Building. Characters now start with basic Tech unlocked by default, and you push further by actually playing the game rather than hitting arbitrary level thresholds.
There are three ways to unlock new Tech now:
The Specialization system has been removed entirely. Its effects are now folded into Tech tree nodes and the new facility enhancements, so builds that previously relied on specialization bonuses need to be rethought around the enhanced facilities instead.
The ammunition system got a meaningful simplification in version 2.3.6. Rifles, submachine guns, and light machine guns now all use medium-caliber ammunition, and advanced ammo formulas have been adjusted with significantly higher output. To keep damage balanced, high-level enemy HP was slightly reduced at the same time.
For builds, this means you no longer need to split your ammo crafting budget across multiple calibers when running mixed weapon loadups. A rifle-focused build and an SMG-focused build now share the same ammo pool, which frees up inventory space and simplifies resource planning. Rifle setups specifically benefit from recoil reduction and critical amplification mutations, and that logic still applies here.
Gear itself also no longer has level requirements, and more high-quality lost gear spawns in the wilderness. Your starting weapon is now the Rustic Crossbow rather than a firearm, so early-game builds need to account for that transition window before you get your preferred weapon type online.
After testing different configurations against the current enemy scaling and the new Tech tree, here is how the main archetypes break down:
| Playstyle | Focus Attribute | Core Strength | Main Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo Explorer | Sustain + Mobility | High independence, self-sufficient | Lower burst damage output |
| PvE Specialist | Skill Power + Cooldown | Strong boss performance | Limited PvP viability |
| PvP Duelist | Crit + Defense | High survivability in duels | Resource intensive to maintain |
| Hybrid Flexible | Balanced Scaling | Adaptable to most content | No extreme strengths in any area |
| Group Support | Buff Aura + Debuff | Elevates entire team performance | Dependent on squad coordination |
Glass-cannon setups can dominate in short burst windows but collapse in longer fights. The current enemy HP adjustments in 2.3.6 slightly favor sustained damage builds over pure burst, so PvE Specialists who stack cooldown reduction and ability amplification will feel the benefit more consistently.
Solo play demands self-sufficiency above everything else. Healing passives, hybrid weapon scaling, and mobility perks form the reliable core. With body type now affecting movement speed (Light Build gives +5% movement speed at the cost of -10 Load, while Heavy Build adds +10 Load but reduces movement speed by 5%), solo explorers should lean toward Light Build for faster traversal and escape options.
The new Gardening Shears formula for Gardener-class players doubles resource yield from trees and shrubs, which makes resource-heavy solo bases significantly cheaper to maintain. The trade-off is losing seed drops while the shears are active, so plan your gathering runs around whether you need materials or seeds on a given session.
Boss encounters and world events reward burst windows and ability uptime. An effective PvE rotation structure looks like this:
Stacking elemental modifiers to interact with environmental hazards adds extra damage on top of your primary rotation. With the new Tech Enhancement system, raising your Tech level grants enhancement points that unlock fixed extra effects on specific Tech nodes. These enhancements cannot be reset, but they can be traded with other players, which creates a genuine economy around optimized enhancement loadouts.
In RaidZone, the April 8 update also nerfed the Shrapnel Grenade specifically: explosion damage dropped from 120 to 90, and the blast radius shrank from 5 meters to 3 meters. This shifts PvP combat away from grenade-heavy area denial and toward direct engagement builds.
Shield values, evasion boosts, and crowd-control resistance outperform raw damage numbers in sustained PvP. Positioning matters more than stats at high levels, so builds that support fast repositioning and defensive cooldown timing will outperform glass-cannon setups in extended fights.
Balance updates in Once Human adjust skill coefficients and weapon stats regularly. The version 2.3.6 overhaul is one of the largest in recent memory, removing entire material tiers and consolidating them. Five fabric types (Shabby, Cotton, Carbon Fiber, and others) are now unified as Fabric. Five parts types are now unified as Parts. Five plastic types are now unified as Plastic. Any legacy items in your inventory are automatically flagged and can be converted at any time.
When a major patch drops, test your build in controlled encounters before committing resources to upgrades. Track damage numbers, survivability duration, and resource consumption rather than relying on pre-patch guides. Adaptation does not mean abandoning your preferred playstyle. Adjust secondary perks and scaling priorities to stay effective without rebuilding from scratch every season.
Coordinated squads benefit from defined roles rather than everyone running similar damage setups. Support builds centered on buff auras, healing zones, and debuff applications amplify team performance in ways that raw DPS cannot replicate. The key is communication and consistent server routing, since desynchronization between players during multi-phase encounters can cause coordination to break down regardless of how good the individual builds are.
With the new Tech Enhancement system allowing enhancements to be traded between players, coordinated teams can specialize one player in farming specific enhancement effects and distribute them across the squad. This creates a meaningful group economy that was not possible under the old Specialization system.
Endgame content punishes inefficiency hard. Enemy scaling increases significantly in high-level zones, and the new Tech tree means synergy-based scaling outperforms incremental stat stacking at that stage. Prioritize multipliers that enhance your core mechanics rather than minor attribute boosts that become negligible against scaled enemies.
The Legendary Mod Selection Crate now has a guaranteed single recovery period shortened to 7 days, which means endgame players can cycle through mod combinations faster than before. Track which mods interact with your primary weapon type and ability rotation, and use the shorter recovery window to test variations without committing permanently.
