Paralives puts Science in a category called Knowledge Skills, one of seven in the game. The Science Knowledge skill acts as a parent category that boosts how quickly your Para picks up related sub-skills like Biology, Astronomy, and Surgery. Getting this skill to a high level is the foundation for a whole branch of careers, from school science teacher all the way to astronaut. The catch right now is that not all parts of the Science tree are fully working in Early Access, which trips up a lot of players.
How does the Science Knowledge skill work?
Science Knowledge is the umbrella. When you raise it, your Para becomes more efficient at learning everything underneath it. The skill caps at level 20 currently, though that ceiling may shift in future updates.
The sub-skills sitting under Science are:
- Biology (Practical Skill)
- Astronomy (Practical Skill)
- Surgery (Practical Skill)
All three are tied to Science Knowledge, meaning a higher parent skill accelerates progress in each of them, assuming those sub-skills are actually functional.

How to level up the Science skill
There are four main methods for raising Science Knowledge:
- Study on a computer — Click the computer, select Learn About, then choose Science. Your Para will keep researching until the Bored mood kicks in and stops progress.
- Read a Science book — Interact with any bookcase, select Read Book, and pick a Science Book. Boredom applies here too, so take breaks when needed.
- Use a telescope — Looking through a telescope currently feeds Science Knowledge directly, even though Astronomy as a sub-skill has limited implementation.
- Level sub-skills — Progressing Biology or Surgery also contributes to the parent Science Knowledge skill, though sub-skill progression is inconsistent right now.
Keeping your Para's needs met and their emotional state positive also speeds up skill gains across the board. A tired or uncomfortable Para learns noticeably slower.

What about Biology, Astronomy, and Surgery?
This is where things get complicated. Here is the current state of each sub-skill:
The in-game description for Biology reads: "Your skill level in biology. Improve it by learning about it on the computer." Following those instructions, however, does not reliably produce Biology experience for many players. Testing confirms that Biology does not level through a consistent gameplay loop the way skills like Cooking or Painting do. The developers have included these sub-skills in the game data and UI, so fuller implementation is expected in upcoming patches.
For players in our Paralives guides collection who are working through multiple skills at once, the safest approach right now is to treat Science Knowledge as the active grind and leave Biology, Astronomy, and Surgery for later patches.

Which careers use the Science Knowledge skill?
Raising Science Knowledge opens a significant number of career paths. Here is the full list of jobs that rely on it:
- Science Teacher
- Researcher (Museum)
- Conservateur (Museum)
- Astronomy Researcher (Space Agency)
- Astronomy Researcher Supervisor (Space Agency)
- Environmental Researcher (University Research Lab)
- Environmental Researcher Supervisor (University Research Lab)
- Mission Co-ordinator (Space Agency)
- Astronaut (Space Agency)
- Astronaut Trainer (Space Agency)
- CEO (Space Agency)
The Space Agency branch is the most demanding, with roles like Astronaut and CEO sitting at the top of the progression chain. Getting Science Knowledge to high levels early gives your Para the best shot at those senior positions. For a full breakdown of how promotions and perks work across all jobs, the Paralives career guide covers every detail.
How to use cheats to level Science and Biology
If you want to skip the grind or test career progression without waiting for Biology to be properly implemented, cheats work reliably for both the parent skill and the sub-skills.
Open the cheat console with Ctrl + F1, then use the following commands:
For Science Knowledge:
- SETSKILLLEVEL KNOWLEDGESCIENCE 20 (replace 20 with any level up to 20)
- LEVELUPSKILL KNOWLEDGESCIENCE (increases by one level)
For Biology:
- SETSKILLLEVEL Biology 10 (replace 10 with your target level)
- LEVELUPSKILL Biology (increases by one level)
The Biology skill ID is simply Biology with no additional prefix. These commands work even though the normal gameplay loop for Biology is unreliable.
What to prioritize while Biology is incomplete
Given the current state of the sub-skills, here is the practical approach:
- Grind Science Knowledge actively through computer study and books.
- Use a telescope for variety since it feeds the same parent skill.
- Check the Skills panel regularly to track actual progress.
- Use cheats to set Biology or Astronomy levels if career progression requires them.
- Revisit Biology naturally once updates improve its implementation.
If you are building out your Para's skill set more broadly, skills like fitness, art, and food all have complete progression loops right now. The Paralives fitness skill guide is a good companion read if you want to round out a well-developed Para while waiting for the Science sub-skills to catch up.
