Introduction

RAGE 2 is what happens when id Software's shooter DNA meets Avalanche Studios' open-world chaos engine. Set in a colorful, anarchic wasteland where 80% of humanity is already gone, the game hands you Nanotrite superpowers, a growing arsenal, and a tyrannical faction called the Authority that needs dismantling. The shooting feels exceptional, and the world is wide enough to get genuinely lost in.

Overview

RAGE 2 is a first-person open-world shooter developed jointly by id Software and Avalanche Studios, published by Bethesda Softworks and released on May 13, 2019. The premise is straightforward: an asteroid wiped out 80% of Earth's population, the survivors are mostly hostile, and you play as Walker, the last Ranger left standing. The Authority controls what remains of civilization with military force, and your job is to tear that control apart.

The collaboration between studios is what makes RAGE 2 distinct. id Software brings the tight, satisfying gunplay that defined Doom (2016), while Avalanche contributes the sprawling open world and vehicle systems from their Just Cause work. The result is a game that moves between biomes, from dense jungles and swamps to cracked desert flats, each populated with enemy camps, hidden Arks containing new weapons, and faction conflicts that play out without player involvement.

Gameplay and mechanics: how does RAGE 2 actually play?

The core combat loop rewards aggression. Walker carries upgradable weapons alongside Nanotrite powers, biological abilities that let you slam enemies into the air, project a shockwave, or throw up a barrier. The Overdrive mechanic is the ceiling of this system: activate it and your weapons deal amplified damage, health regenerates on kills, and the entire encounter accelerates into something closer to a highlight reel than a firefight.

Key mechanics that define the experience:

  • Overdrive mode for amplified combat states
  • Nanotrite powers with separate upgrade trees
  • Ark locations that unlock new weapons and abilities
  • Vehicle combat across multiple wasteland biomes
  • Faction-controlled regions with distinct enemy behaviors

Weapon variety runs from the Wingstick, a returning fan favorite from the original RAGE, to the Hyper Cannon and Grav-Dart Launcher. Each weapon has its own upgrade path, funded by resources collected across the world.

World and setting

The wasteland spans several distinct regions, each controlled by different factions with their own visual identity and combat style. The Goon Squad operates differently from the Immortal Shrouded or the River Hogs, which means the game's enemy variety holds up across longer play sessions. The Authority sits above all of them as the primary antagonist force, fielding heavier units and more organized resistance.

Vehicle traversal covers the gaps between combat zones. Monster trucks, gyrocopters, and buggies all handle differently and can be upgraded. Combat while driving is supported across all vehicle types, making the open world feel genuinely dangerous rather than a loading screen between fights.

Content and replayability

RAGE 2 received two post-launch expansions. Rise of the Ghosts added a new enemy faction led by a character named Iris, the Feltrite Laser Launcher, the Void ability, and a large new region called the Overgrown City. TerrorMania followed with an alternate-reality zone called the Deadlands, the Sword of Transitus as a melee weapon, and undead versions of existing factions including the Goon Squad and Abadon Muties. Both expansions are included in the Digital Deluxe Edition alongside the Doom BFG weapon and Wasteland Wizard Cheat Codes.

The base game's Ark system gives the open world a reason to explore beyond the main story. Each Ark holds either a weapon or a Nanotrite ability, and finding them changes how combat plays out. Players who push into every corner of the wasteland will have a noticeably different toolkit than those who stick to the critical path, which gives the RPG progression real weight.
