Introduction

Rayman Origins is the platformer that reminded everyone what the genre could look like when a small, passionate team stopped chasing trends and started drawing. Built on Michel Ancel's UBIart Framework and packed with four-player co-op, it's a game that holds up visually and mechanically well over a decade after its 2012 release.

Overview

Rayman Origins puts Ubisoft Montpellier's UBIart Framework front and center, producing hand-drawn 2D animation that still looks sharper than most modern platformers. The premise is classic chaos: the Bubble Dreamer's snoring triggers a war with the Land of the Livid Dead, Darktoons flood the Glade of Dreams, and Rayman, Globox, and two Teensies are left to sort it all out. It's silly, colorful, and completely committed to its own absurdity.

The game spans 12 distinct environments and more than 60 levels, ranging from lush jungles and underwater caverns to frozen tundras and mosquito-riding chase sequences. Each world introduces new mechanics without overstaying its welcome. Collectible Electoons are scattered throughout, rewarding thorough players with bonus stages and unlockable content. The pacing rarely drags.

Gameplay and mechanics

At its core, Rayman Origins is a precision 2D platformer with a generous moveset that expands as the adventure progresses. Key abilities include:

The controls are tight enough to satisfy players who want to chase gold medals and speed times, but forgiving enough that newcomers can push through the campaign without constant frustration. Boss fights break up the level structure with genuinely creative encounters: a mountain-sized golem, a carnivorous flower, a pink monster with hundreds of eyes. Each one demands a different approach.

Four-player co-op: is it worth playing with friends?

Yes, and this is where Rayman Origins gets genuinely chaotic. Up to four players can jump in or out at any point without interrupting the session. Player one controls Rayman, while additional players take Globox or either of the two Teensies. The jump-in system doesn't penalize anyone for leaving mid-level, which makes it practical for mixed-skill groups.

Co-op introduces a competitive edge too. Players can grab and throw each other, which leads to both clutch assists and deliberate sabotage depending on the group. The game doesn't punish this behavior, which means sessions with friends tend to swing between cooperative problem-solving and gleeful trolling.

Visual and audio design

The UBIart Framework gives Rayman Origins a look that no other major platformer of its era matched. Characters move with exaggerated, fluid animation that feels closer to a Cartoon Network short than a video game. The 12 environments are genuinely distinct, each with its own color palette, enemy design, and visual logic.

The soundtrack matches the visual energy. Composer Christophe Héral wrote music that shifts tone across worlds without losing coherence, from bouncy jungle rhythms to eerie underwater ambience. Sound design is equally expressive, with every punch, stomp, and Globox burp landing with comic timing.

Content and replayability

Finishing the main campaign is only part of what Rayman Origins offers. Electoon cages unlock time-trial levels that test the player's mastery of every mechanic introduced across the game. Land of the Livid Dead stages provide some of the hardest platforming challenges in the package. Players chasing full completion will find the back half of the game significantly more demanding than the opening hours suggest. Note that as of January 2024, Ubisoft has decommissioned the game's online features, so any leaderboard or online functionality no longer works on PC.
