Roaming scientist boats patrol the seas around Rust's main island and only engage geared players, using the patrol helicopter's targeting rules. Printed and Polished added these rare mainland encounters on November 5, 2026. You can encounter them during ordinary coastal travel without entering the Deep Sea. Before approaching, decide whether you want to fight the crew or keep your journey focused on transporting your equipment and supplies.

Where can you encounter roaming scientist boats?

Look in the mainland ocean, including coastal waters around the main island. Watch the water along your intended route when leaving shore or returning with supplies.

These mainland encounters extend scientist boat patrols beyond the Deep Sea. You do not need to visit a Ghost Ship or travel to a Deep Sea island to encounter the new roaming groups.

The Rust Naval Update guide covers the wider boat-building and sea-warfare systems if your next decision is which vessel to prepare for an ocean trip.

How many groups appear, and how long do they stay?

An hour is the maximum stated patrol duration, not a guaranteed window for finding or fighting them.

How many boat groups can patrol the island?

Up to two groups enter the mainland waters to patrol. That figure counts groups, not individual boats, so do not read it as a two-vessel limit.

Treat a sighting as a group encounter when assessing whether to approach. Check the surrounding water before focusing all your attention on the first vessel you notice.

How long do their patrols last?

The groups patrol for up to an hour before leaving.

Your first sighting does not establish when a group arrived. Do not start a fresh one-hour countdown when you notice it, or build your return journey around the assumption that it will remain nearby for that entire period.

Which players will roaming scientist boats engage?

Plan your approach around the same equipment-based engagement rules used by the patrol helicopter.

Use the patrol helicopter's gear rules

A geared coastal journey should include the possibility of scientist boat combat, even if your objective is gathering or transport.

The boats' selective targeting is not an invitation to approach with valuable equipment simply because they have not fired yet. Decide whether to close the distance before committing your vessel to the encounter.

Choose between passing and fighting

Use your objective to make the route decision:

  • Transporting supplies: Avoid deliberately closing on a patrol when keeping your cargo is the priority.
  • Looking for combat: Prepare for the boat's crew and movement, not a stationary target.
  • Travelling with teammates: Make the approach decision together before one player moves the group toward the patrol.

An inventory image is an example loadout, not an exact targeting threshold. Do not use a pictured weapon or clothing combination as a checklist for immunity.

Can you locate these boats using map markers or notifications?

No. Roaming scientist boats have no map markers or notifications. You cannot follow a dedicated event icon or wait for an arrival notification to tell you that a patrol is present.

Locate them through direct observation while travelling. An empty map does not establish that the water ahead is clear of these encounters.

Use the map to plan your route, then return your attention to the water. Checking an event display cannot replace watching for the boats themselves.

What changes when you engage a scientist boat?

Printed and Polished also updates scientist boat movement and targeting. PT Boat turrets receive separate handling and shooting improvements.

Movement, targeting, and turret behavior

SystemCurrent behaviorEngagement decision
NavigationScientist boats avoid and navigate obstacles more effectively.Do not rely on a nearby obstacle to strand a pursuing boat.
Target selectionBoats follow and switch targets more fluidly.Keep watching the patrol when its attention moves between players.
RepositioningBoats reposition when none of their shooters can see the target.Use a break in visibility to move, not to wait for the boat to remain at the same angle.
PT Boat turretsRewritten turrets are more responsive and have a new shooting system.Do not base an approach on slow turret handling.

The PT Boat turret changes concern that vessel's weapons. Keep them separate from the mainland encounter's group limit, patrol duration, and player-targeting rules.

Killing the driver does not finish the encounter

Choose an attack position that lets you continue dealing with the remaining crew. Do not abandon cover or move in to board solely because the original driver has been killed.
