Follow this Rust Wool Armour Insert guide to unlock the item on the Workbench Level 1 tech tree and craft it with 20 wool for essential cold-focused protection.
Added in the Printed and Polished update on November 5, 2026, the insert gives slotted clothing a large cold-resistance bonus and smaller melee and projectile bonuses. Its main use is preparing for Arctic nights. The choice is whether warmth deserves an insert slot in your current kit, or whether you need the stronger projectile protection offered by Wooden or Metal inserts.
Where do you unlock the Wool Armour Insert?
Follow the Workbench Level 1 tech tree
The Wool Armour Insert sits after the Wooden Armour Insert on the Workbench Level 1 tech tree. You can start this progression at the first workbench tier without reaching Workbench Level 2.
Follow these steps:
- Collect Blueprint Fragments from common loot sources, including barrels and boxes.
- Open the tech tree at Workbench Level 1.
- Follow the branch through the Wooden Armour Insert to the Wool Armour Insert.
- Learn the blueprint before gathering materials for production.
The November blueprint rework separates tech-tree currency from Research Table currency. Workbench Level 1 progression uses Blueprint Fragments, while researching an existing item still uses scrap.
| Unlock route | What you need | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| Workbench Level 1 tech tree | Eight Blueprint Fragments for the total path | You want to unlock the recipe without an existing insert |
| Research Table | One Wool Armour Insert and 100 scrap | You already have an insert to research |
The fragment figure covers the full path, not an additional charge on top of its preceding nodes. Your remaining cost depends on which earlier blueprints you have already learned.
What material does the Wool Armour Insert use?
One insert costs 20 wool. Wool is the only material in its crafting recipe, and Workbench Level 1 is the minimum crafting station.
Once you know the blueprint, gather the wool, stand within range of a suitable workbench, and select the insert in the crafting menu. Higher-level workbenches shorten its crafting time without changing the recipe.
| Workbench | Time per insert |
|---|---|
| Workbench Level 1 | 15 seconds |
| Workbench Level 2 | 7.5 seconds |
| Workbench Level 3 | 3.75 seconds |
Keep blueprint unlocks and production costs separate when planning supplies. Fragments or scrap pay for learning the item; wool pays for each copy you make afterward.
Gather wool with Shears
Use Shears to collect wool from sheep. Their blueprint is known by default, and crafting them requires Workbench Level 1.
Shears produce more wool and cannot hurt a sheep if you miss its wool and hit its skin. Sheep you own regrow wool every five minutes, allowing repeat harvests from the same animals.
The livestock interface displays the wool cooldown. Check it before returning for another harvest instead of assuming the sheep is ready as soon as you finish crafting.
How much cold, melee, and projectile protection does it add?
The Wool Armour Insert puts most of its protection into cold exposure. Its combat bonuses cover bullets, arrows, and the three melee damage types below.
| Protection type | Bonus per Wool Armour Insert |
|---|---|
| Cold exposure | 24% |
| Slash, blunt, and stab | 2% each |
| Bullets | 1% |
| Arrows | 1% |
The insert has a 0% movement-speed penalty. You do not trade movement speed for its protection bonuses.
Treat wool as a cold-weather upgrade with some combat protection attached. Printed and Polished specifically identifies Arctic nights as its intended use, while its bullet and arrow bonuses remain smaller than those of projectile-focused inserts.
A higher protection percentage is not a promise that every kit becomes suitable for every temperature. Plan around the clothing you are wearing and the conditions you expect, not the insert alone.
How do you equip and remove the insert?
Drag the installed insert back into your inventory when you want to move it between kits.
Check that your clothing has a slot
Inserts need compatible clothing with an existing insert slot. Crafting the insert does not create a slot in the clothing you want to use.
Eligible pieces such as the Jacket, Road Sign Jacket, and Metal Chestplate can roll between zero and three slots when crafted. A piece that rolls zero cannot accept an insert. The Metal Facemask, Coffee Can Helmet, and Road Sign Kilt have a maximum of one slot each.
Inspect the actual item before spending wool on several inserts. Its slot count determines how many you can fit, regardless of the maximum possible for that clothing type.
Apply or swap the insert
- Open your inventory and select the compatible clothing item.
- Find its empty insert slots in the item details.
- Drag the Wool Armour Insert into an open slot.
- Equip the clothing to use its protection.
You can remove an insert or replace it with another type without destroying it.
Installed inserts remain lootable with their clothing. If another player takes the item after your death, they also get the inserts inside it.
Should you choose wool over another insert?
Choose wool when cold resistance is the problem you need to solve. Choose a different insert when your limited slots need to address bullets, radiation, or explosions.
| Insert | Main reason to choose it | Trade-off against wool |
|---|---|---|
| Wool Armour Insert | Cold-weather protection | Gives less projectile protection than Wooden or Metal inserts |
| Wooden Armour Insert | 2% projectile protection per insert | A stronger early projectile option, without wool's cold-focused benefit |
| Metal Armour Insert | 4% projectile protection per insert | Stronger for bullet protection, but loot-only |
| Lead Armour Insert | 5% radiation protection per insert | Uses the slot to address radiation |
| Asbestos Armour Insert | 8% explosion protection per insert | Uses the slot to address explosive damage |
For a cold-weather kit, wool addresses an environmental weakness. For a kit built primarily for gunfights, Wooden or Metal inserts provide more projectile protection per slot.
You can also mix insert types on clothing with multiple slots. Because swapping preserves the inserts, you do not need to commit a piece permanently to one role. Keep alternatives in storage and change them when your next trip calls for a different protection type.
How much wool do you get from recycling?
Recycling a spare Wool Armour Insert returns wool, with the amount depending on the recycler type.
| Recycler | Guaranteed wool returned |
|---|---|
| Red Recycler | 15 |
| Green Recycler, powered | 12 |
| Green Recycler | 10 |
| Yellow Recycler | Eight |
Every listed recycler returns less wool than the original crafting cost. Removing an insert from clothing is therefore the better choice when you intend to use it again; recycling is for copies you want to turn back into materials.
Keep a reusable insert if Arctic travel remains part of your plans. Recycle surplus copies only when you need the wool more than another cold-weather slot.
