Overview
Scavland is a hardcore top-down pixel art survival RPG developed and published by NoShadow, set in Zalesye, a post-apocalyptic Soviet-era region consumed by war and the ever-present Mist. Players take the role of a Vulture, a scavenger piecing together survival from whatever the old world left behind. Ammunition runs out, firearms jam at the worst moments, radiation lingers in every irradiated swamp, and a single bad expedition can end a run before it even gets going.

The game entered Early Access on September 4, 2026, giving players access to the handcrafted open world of Zalesye while NoShadow continues development. The core loop is already firmly in place: prepare a loadout, head out into dangerous territory, scavenge what you can, survive encounters with mutants and hostile survivors, then return to trade, upgrade, and push further into the wastes next time.

Gameplay and mechanics: how does the survival loop work?
Scavland's survival loop is built around resource scarcity and meaningful preparation. Every expedition demands a loadout decision before you leave the safety of a settlement. The key mechanics shaping each run include:
- Weapon jamming and ammo scarcity
- Radiation management across different zones
- Modular firearm customization with swappable attachments
- Faction reputation affecting trader stock and quest access
- Procedurally generated underground bunkers for varied exploration
Weapons aren't disposable pickups here. Firearms are assembled from collected components and attachments, meaning a well-configured rifle suited to your playstyle takes real investment. The further you venture from known roads and settlements, the deadlier the enemies and the richer the potential loot, which keeps the risk-reward tension tight across every session.

World and setting: what is the Mist?
Zalesye is a handcrafted open world built from abandoned structures, dangerous forests, irradiated swamps, and scattered remnants of pre-war civilization. The Mist is the defining threat of the setting, a mysterious force that has ravaged the continent and pushed survivors into desperate factions, each with their own agenda for what remains of society.
The player character's story begins with a near-fatal shooting by soldiers rumored to come from a land untouched by the Mist, somewhere east of the RO-29 Highway. That survival, and the question of why it happened, drives the narrative forward. The people of Zalesye trade stories about the East as a kind of promised land, but whether those stories hold any truth is something the game leaves deliberately open.
Faction relationships and reputation
Zalesye's settlements are populated by traders, scavengers, and rival factions, each reacting to the player's choices and completed jobs. Reputation isn't a cosmetic stat. It determines what traders stock, which quests become available, and how different groups treat a Vulture on sight. Working with one faction can quietly close doors with another, making allegiance decisions carry real weight over a full playthrough.

Traders gate their best equipment behind earned trust rather than raw currency, which ties the scavenging loop directly into the social layer of the game. Every job completed, every request fulfilled, and every choice made in the field feeds back into the standing Vultures hold across Zalesye's communities.
Technical achievement: play anywhere with Steam Deck support
Scavland was built with Steam Deck and controller support as first-class features rather than afterthoughts. Steam Cloud sync means a session started on PC can be continued on a Steam Deck without any manual save management. For a game where preparation and inventory management matter as much as combat, having full controller support with a properly mapped interface makes the couch-play experience genuinely viable rather than a compromised port.
