Introduction

Running a gas station at midnight sounds straightforward until the customers stop being human. Shift At Midnight blends gas station management with doppelganger detection and survival horror, supporting 1 to 4 players with proximity chat. Every shift is randomly generated, so the paranoia never gets stale. Miss one creature and the whole night turns into a desperate scramble to barricade, trap, and hide.

Overview

Shift At Midnight is a co-op horror simulation developed by Bun Muen and published by Kwalee, released on July 22, 2026 for PC and Xbox. The premise sounds almost mundane: stock shelves, take deliveries, serve customers, hit your quota. The catch is that some of those customers are doppelgangers wearing human faces, and letting one walk out the door turns the rest of the shift into a survival nightmare.

The game supports 1 to 4 players, with proximity chat baked in to make every whispered suspicion and panicked warning feel genuinely tense. Story Mode runs across 13 shifts, each one randomly generated so the customer mix, doppelganger count, and timing never repeat exactly. That randomness keeps the paranoia fresh even after multiple playthroughs.

Gameplay and mechanics: how does the doppelganger detection work?

Spotting a doppelganger is not a guessing game. The detection system asks you to examine ID, cross-check details on the in-store computer, and watch customer behaviour for tells. Every interaction is a small investigation running parallel to the actual work of keeping the store stocked and clean.

The core loop has two distinct modes that can collide at any moment:

  • Serve customers and manage stock
  • Interrogate suspicious individuals
  • Execute confirmed doppelgangers on sight
  • Clean up the evidence afterward
  • Survive the shift if one escapes

The tension comes from time pressure. Deliveries arrive, shelves empty, and the quota does not care that you are busy grilling a customer about their paperwork. Balancing the mundane against the monstrous is where Shift At Midnight earns its identity.

What happens when a doppelganger escapes?

If one creature makes it out of the store, the game shifts entirely. The management sim pauses and survival horror takes over. Doors need barricading, traps need placing, and hiding spots become the only real currency. The monster version of the escaped doppelganger returns to hunt, and the store that felt manageable moments ago becomes a maze of bad options.

This two-phase structure is what separates Shift At Midnight from straightforward horror games. The threat of the survival phase motivates careful play during the management phase, and a single lapse in concentration can unravel an otherwise clean shift.

Multiplayer and social features

Proximity chat is the feature that ties the multiplayer experience together. Hearing a teammate's voice cut out as they round a corner, or listening to a hushed argument about whether a customer's ID checks out, adds a layer of tension that text chat simply cannot replicate. The game is playable solo, but the co-op design clearly shapes every system.

Character customisation lets players personalise their gas station workers, which matters more than it might seem in a game where you spend extended time with the same cast. The proximity chat and customisation together give the multiplayer sessions a social texture that horror games often skip.

Content and replayability

Story Mode's 13 randomly generated shifts give the game a solid foundation of replayable content. No two shifts produce the same combination of doppelgangers, customer behaviour patterns, or timing, so replaying the same shift index still feels different. The randomisation applies to the entire customer roster, meaning regulars and monsters mix differently each time.

A free Endless Mode update is listed for Q4 2026, promising additional customers, weapons, traps, and monsters. The base game's randomly generated structure already supports extended play, and the proximity chat co-op format rewards a regular group of players who develop shorthand for spotting threats fast.
