Slay the Spire 2 Boss Guide: How to Beat Vantom

Vantom is one of the three possible Act 1 bosses in Slay the Spire 2, and for many players it ends up being the nastiest surprise of the early game. Its signature Slippery mechanic completely shuts down heavy-hitting decks, and if you don't adjust your strategy on the fly, you'll watch your best cards bounce off for 1 damage while the boss slowly ramps up to punish you. The good news? Once you know exactly what Vantom is doing and why, the fight becomes very manageable.

What Is Vantom's Slippery Mechanic?

Slippery is the core gimmick that defines this entire fight. At the start of combat, Vantom enters with 9 stacks of Slippery. Each stack means that the next time Vantom takes damage from any source, that hit deals only 1 HP regardless of how powerful the attack is. All 9 stacks must be stripped away before your damage output matters at all.

This is why players who built aggressive, hard-hitting decks during Act 1 hit a wall here. A card dealing 20 damage? Still just 1. A relic-boosted strike? Also 1. The mechanic specifically punishes the instinct to go all-out from turn one.

How to Strip Slippery Stacks Fast

The fastest way to remove Slippery stacks is to hit Vantom as many times as possible per turn, regardless of damage per hit. Each individual hit consumes one stack, so multi-hit cards are far more efficient here than single powerful strikes.

Cards worth prioritizing for this phase:

  • Twin Strike (hits twice for one energy, removes two stacks per play)
  • Whirlwind (scales with energy, can strip multiple stacks in one use)
  • Low-cost single attacks played in volume across your hand

The goal in the first three turns is purely attrition against Slippery. Save your big finishers, high-cost attacks, and powerful combos for after all 9 stacks are gone.

What Are Vantom's Attack Patterns?

Vantom operates on a three-turn cycle that telegraphs its moves clearly once you know what to look for. Understanding this cycle lets you plan your defensive turns in advance.

The Three-Turn Tail Stab Cycle

The Tail Stab on turn 3 of each cycle deals roughly 20 damage and inflicts 3 Wound cards directly into your deck. Wounds are unplayable cards that clog your draws, so accumulating multiple rounds of them will significantly reduce your effective hand size over time. This is one of the strongest reasons to end the fight quickly.

After the stab, Vantom gains a permanent Strength increase, meaning each subsequent cycle hits harder. Across the full fight, Vantom's damage output escalates from around 7 damage per attack early on up toward 30 damage per turn in later cycles.

How Much Damage Does the Tail Stab Deal?

The Tail Stab hits for approximately 20 damage and is the most dangerous single attack in Vantom's kit. Since you know exactly when it is coming (turn 3 of each cycle), you can plan defensively. If playing Ironclad, cards like Armaments and Defend are solid choices for building block on turns 2 and 3 of each cycle.

Because Slay the Spire 2 fully heals you between acts, you can afford to absorb some damage from Vantom without it hurting your long-term run. That said, the Wound card pollution is a bigger concern than raw HP loss here.

How to Beat Vantom Step by Step

Here is the practical approach to take into the fight:

  1. Turns 1 to 3 (Slippery Phase): Focus entirely on hitting Vantom as many times as possible each turn. Use multi-hit cards and low-cost attacks. Do not waste high-energy power cards here.
  2. Watch the tail animation: On turn 2 of the first cycle, begin preparing block cards for the incoming Tail Stab.
  3. Tank the Tail Stab with block: Stack enough block to absorb or reduce the ~20 damage hit. Accept the 3 Wounds and continue.
  4. After Slippery is gone: Unleash your strongest attacks. This is when big damage cards, potions, and high-energy plays pay off.
  5. Use a Weak Potion if available: Throwing a Weak Potion early reduces Vantom's damage output for the first cycle, buying you breathing room while you work through Slippery.
  6. Finish within 10 to 12 rounds: Each tail stab cycle adds Wounds and Strength. Speed is your best friend once Slippery is cleared.
