The map in The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu starts almost completely locked down. Large chunks of the island stay hidden until you track down Fort Logbooks, collectibles found exclusively inside jungle Forts. The second expedition introduces this mechanic and tasks you with finding your first one, so knowing the route before you step off the ship saves a lot of wandering through enemy-packed jungle paths.
What are Fort Logbooks and why do they matter?
Fort Logbooks are collectible items tied directly to map progression. Once you return to the ship and open the map after grabbing a logbook, white dots appear around specific areas of the island. Those dots mark where additional logbooks are waiting, turning what was once a blank, locked map into a navigable guide for future expeditions.
Without logbooks, the map stays dark. With them, you get a clear picture of where the island's secrets are concentrated, which makes planning your next run considerably easier.

Where are Forts located in The Mound?
Here's the thing most players get wrong on their first run: Forts are not large structures. They are small tents tucked into the inner areas of the jungle, easy to walk past if you are following the wrong path. The routes leading to them wind through enemy groups and locked doors, which is part of why the first Fort feels so hard to find.
Forts only appear in jungle locations, so you will not find a logbook on the shore or in open areas. Keep that in mind when you are exploring and feel like you have checked everywhere.
How to get your first Fort Logbook
This walkthrough covers the second expedition, which is the earliest point in the game where a logbook becomes available. You can run it solo or with friends; the route works either way.

Stairs lead to the Fort entrance
Step 1: Start at the shore and go right
When you spawn, head right along the shore first. The logbook is not in this direction, but the area holds valuables worth collecting before you push deeper. Once you have swept the right side, return to the spawn point.
Step 2: Head left and find the medallion shack
From the spawn point, move left and follow the path. You will eventually reach a small shack containing a medallion. Picking up the medallion reveals all the island's riches on the map, which makes locating valuables much faster. That said, the logbook is reachable without it, so do not stress if you miss the shack on your first pass.
Step 3: Push up the rising path and clear enemies
Continue following the left-side path as it starts to rise. At the top, you will face a group of enemies and undead. Clear them before moving forward. Past the combat, the path leads straight to a locked door that can only be opened from the inside. The Fort is beyond this door, but you cannot go through it yet.
Step 4: Take the stairs on the left
Turn left from the locked door to find a staircase leading upward. Climb it, then continue straight until you hit a second set of stairs. At this point, only one enemy typically blocks the path. Defeat the undead, then drop down on the left side. You will take a small amount of fall damage, but nothing significant.
Step 5: Enter the Fort and grab the logbook
After dropping down, follow the path straight. It will eventually lead you directly into the Fort. A brief time transition between past and present plays out. Once it finishes, the Fort Logbook becomes available to pick up.

Step 6: Open the locked door and return to the ship
With the logbook in hand, open the locked door from the inside to create a shortcut back to your oxcart. If you have collected enough valuables to satisfy the expedition contract, head back to the ship. Opening the map on board will now show those white dots marking future logbook locations across the island.
What happens after you collect a logbook?
Returning to the ship and checking the map is the payoff. The white dots that appear are not decorative; each one marks a specific spot where another logbook can be found in that jungle. This system essentially builds your exploration checklist for every subsequent expedition, so the first logbook you grab is the one that makes all future runs more efficient.
