Hardwood is one of the more annoying resources to track down in Windrose, mostly because the game never tells you exactly where to look. You won't find it by wandering the starting biome or hacking at random trees. It comes from a specific tree type in a specific biome, and you need the right tool before any of it works. Here's everything you need to know to start stocking up.
Where does Hardwood come from in Windrose?
Hardwood drops exclusively from Divi-Divi trees, which only spawn in the Foothills biome. These trees are noticeably larger than standard trees, and they tend to cluster toward the center and higher elevations of Foothills islands rather than along the coastline.
When you chop a Divi-Divi tree down completely, it drops a mix of regular Wood, Hardwood, and Tree Bark. The catch, as documented by Deltia's Gaming, is that the drop rate for Hardwood is low despite the resource being classified as common. Each tree yields only around 1 to 2 Hardwoods on average, so you'll want to clear every Divi-Divi tree on an island before moving on.
info
Divi-Divi trees look similar to regular trees at a distance. Get close enough to see the prompt that reads "Divi-Divi" before committing to the chop.

What tool do you need to chop Divi-Divi trees?
A standard axe won't cut it. According to both sources, you need at least a Copper Axe to chop down Divi-Divi trees. Without one, the trees won't yield anything.
If you don't have a Copper Axe yet, craft one at the Workbench using 5x Copper Ingot and 5x Wood. Equip it before heading into the Foothills, then hit the tree repeatedly until it disappears completely.
warning
Watch out for goats in the Foothills areas. According to nintendosmash.com, they attack without much warning and can interrupt your farming runs.
How to reach the Foothills biome
The Foothills biome isn't available from the start. Windrose uses procedurally generated maps, so there's no fixed location to point you toward. What matters is story progression.
You need to clear the first biome, the Coastal Jungle, before the Foothills opens up. That means defeating the Coastal Jungle boss, Thomas Richards. Once he's down, the main story quest will route you directly into the Foothills. From that point, Divi-Divi trees and their Hardwood drops become accessible.
What is Hardwood used for in Windrose?
Hardwood shows up in a range of mid-to-late game recipes. Based on the source materials, confirmed uses include crafting weapons, ship materials, crafting stations, and decorative items. Given how many recipes call for it and how slowly individual trees drop it, building a stockpile early pays off.
How to farm Hardwood efficiently
Since each Divi-Divi tree only drops 1 to 2 Hardwoods on average, the only real strategy is volume. Clear every Divi-Divi tree on an island before sailing to the next one. Divi-Divi trees do respawn over time, as confirmed by Deltia's Gaming, so revisiting earlier Foothills islands after some time has passed is a valid approach for restocking.
A few practical tips to speed things up:
- Bring a full inventory. Hardwood stacks, but you'll also be picking up regular Wood and Tree Bark from the same trees. Make sure you have enough free slots before you start.
- Clear the island center first. Divi-Divi trees spawn mostly in the middle of Foothills islands, so head there directly instead of working from the edges inward.
- Stay alert for goats. They're aggressive and will knock you out of your chopping rhythm if you're not paying attention.
- Upgrade your axe when possible. The Copper Axe is the minimum requirement, but a better axe will make the chopping faster.
info
Divi-Divi trees also drop Tree Bark alongside Hardwood. Don't discard it, as Tree Bark has its own crafting uses in the Foothills progression.
