Hewn Stone is one of Windrose's most important mid-game crafting materials. You need it to construct several key stations, including the Bellows, the Large Smelting Furnace, and the Enchanting Table. Without it, your base progression stalls hard. The catch is that Hewn Stone does not spawn naturally anywhere in the world, so you cannot simply pick it up while exploring. Every single piece has to be crafted.
How do you unlock the Hewn Stone recipe?
Before you can craft Hewn Stone, you need the recipe. According to the source material documented by Kraken Express, the recipe unlocks when you find Ancient Scraps. These are located in the Ancient Digging Sites found within Cursed Swamp areas. You do not need to do anything special with the Ancient Scraps once you have them; finding them is enough to register the recipe in your crafting list.
Head to Cursed Swamp areas early and sweep the Ancient Digging Sites thoroughly. Picking up Ancient Scraps is the only step between you and the Hewn Stone recipe.
Once the recipe is unlocked, it will appear in your Workbench crafting panel. Scroll down on the left side to find it.

What do you need to craft Hewn Stone?
The crafting cost is straightforward. Each Hewn Stone costs 3x Stones, and Stones are among the most common resources in the game, found scattered across most regions on the ground. There is no cap on how many Hewn Stones you can produce, so stock up on Stones whenever you pass them.
The bigger requirement is your Workbench. Two specific upgrades must be in place before the recipe becomes usable:
- Sawhorse upgrade installed on the Workbench
- Toolbox upgrade installed on the Workbench
- Workbench must be at Level 3
Skip either upgrade and the recipe stays locked even if you have the Ancient Scraps and the Stones ready.
Do not skip the Sawhorse and Toolbox Workbench upgrades. Even with the recipe unlocked and Stones in your inventory, the Hewn Stone option will not be available until both are installed.
How to Craft Hewn Stone
Here is the full process in order:
- Travel to the Cursed Swamp and locate an Ancient Digging Site.
- Collect Ancient Scraps to unlock the Hewn Stone recipe.
- Return to your base and upgrade your Workbench to Level 3, then install the Sawhorse and Toolbox upgrades.
- Gather at least 3x Stones from the ground in any region.
- Interact with the Workbench, scroll down the left crafting panel to Hewn Stone, and confirm the craft.
- Repeat as needed since there is no crafting limit.

Workbench Level 3 required
Stones are one of the easiest resources to accumulate in Windrose. A single pass through almost any area will net you enough for several Hewn Stones, so resource scarcity is rarely an issue here.
What can you build with Hewn Stone?
Once you have a supply of Hewn Stone, the crafting stations it unlocks are worth the effort. Based on the source material, confirmed uses include:
- Bellows (crafting station)
- Large Smelting Furnace (crafting station)
- Enchanting Table (crafting station)
The Enchanting Table in particular represents a significant progression milestone, so prioritizing Hewn Stone production as soon as your Workbench hits Level 3 is the right call.
Craft a batch of Hewn Stones in one session rather than making them one at a time. Since Stones are abundant, there is no reason to gate yourself on this material.
