"This ruleset is temporarily unavailable" in WoW Forever means the ruleset servers weren't ready for you when you got through the login queue. On launch night it greyed out all four rulesets for most players for about 20 minutes. The fix that works is to log out and queue again, because the screen only checks once.
Key takeaways
- The message hit Normal, PvP, Roleplay and Roleplay-PvP all at once in the first minutes after the 3pm PST (11pm GMT) launch on November 4.
- The ruleset screen doesn't refresh on its own. Waiting on it does nothing; logging out and back in does.
- "No realms are currently available" (WOW51900309) is a different message: one ruleset can't be reached yet, usually while the rulesets come up in waves.
- Blizzard hasn't posted a fix or an explanation for either error. Everything below that isn't from Blizzard is labelled as a player report.
What does "This ruleset is temporarily unavailable" mean in WoW Forever?
It means the ruleset you're trying to pick isn't accepting players yet. WoW Forever doesn't have realms in the old sense. It has four rulesets (Normal, PvP, Roleplay and Roleplay-PvP), and each one runs with layering inside it. So when a ruleset isn't ready, you don't get a list of other realms to try. You get a grey card and that message.
At launch it wasn't one ruleset. According to Account Shark's launch-night log, after the login queue "many players saw 'This ruleset is temporarily unavailable' on all four rulesets" from about 5pm to 5:20pm CST, which is 11pm to 11:20pm GMT. Blizzard's customer support replied to one report at 5:05pm CST with "Thanks for the report. We'll pass it along." That's the only Blizzard response to it I could find.
The same message also showed up a week earlier, when Early Name Reservation opened on October 27. The biggest thread on Blizzard's EU forums, "This ruleset is temporarily unavailable", started that day with players unable to pick any ruleset for their reserved names, and it's now marked resolved.
How do you fix "This ruleset is temporarily unavailable"?
Log out, log back in and wait through the queue again. That's it, and it's annoying, because you lose your place.
The reason it works comes from a player in the biggest launch-night thread, quoted by Timesaver: the screen "checks one time when you get through the queue". So if the rulesets weren't ready at the moment you came out of the queue, they'll stay grey however long you sit there. One player reported a nine-minute requeue at position 2,178 doing this.
Here's the order I'd do it in:
- Check that the game is actually up. Blizzard's own go signal came from the @Warcraft account at 5:30pm CST (11:30pm GMT) on November 4, "You can play WoW: Forever starting NOW!", per Account Shark. If you're seeing the message before that, it's just not open yet.
- If all four rulesets are grey, log out to the login screen and log in again.
- If one ruleset lights up and yours doesn't, wait a few minutes and try again. They came up in waves at launch.
- Don't reinstall or run Scan and Repair. Nothing about this error is on your PC.
It isn't a sure fix. In the same thread, two players relogged and got the grey screen again, so you may need more than one go. Most players got in once the servers were properly up, from about 5:10pm to 5:20pm CST according to Account Shark.
For what it's worth, I got straight in on launch night on a US account, with no queue at all. So it really does depend on when you hit the button.
What is "No realms are currently available" (WOW51900309)?
This is the other launch-night message, and it means something slightly different: you picked a ruleset that has lit up, but it still can't be reached.
Account Shark's log has the rulesets coming online in waves between about 5:15pm and 5:30pm CST. Players reported PvP working first, Normal by about 5:25pm CST and Roleplay-PvP last. By 5:44pm CST, Blizzard's WoW Forever server status page listed all four rulesets online in the Americas and Oceania and in Europe.
The fix players reported on r/classicwow, again via Timesaver: restart the Battle.net app, let it install the small update it offers, then log in again. One player said that worked. If you're on a ruleset that's still coming up, waiting a few minutes does the same job.
This error had an earlier wave too. The Normal ruleset for North American accounts was failing with WOW51900309 from about October 31, during name reservation. Timesaver says that problem "looks over" since the November 3 maintenance.
Which error have I got?
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| All four rulesets grey: "This ruleset is temporarily unavailable" | Rulesets not ready when you left the queue | Log out, log in, queue again |
| One ruleset grey, others fine | That ruleset is still coming up | Wait a few minutes, then relog |
| "No realms are currently available" (WOW51900309) | The ruleset you picked can't be reached | Restart Battle.net, install the update, log in again |
| Ruleset cards look fine but won't take a click | One player report, on Linux, no fix yet | Relog; post on Blizzard's forums |
| "Valid access license" (WOW51900337) | The account you picked has no Forever access | Pick the right WoW account in Battle.net |
The last one isn't a server problem at all. It's about which WoW account Battle.net is logging you into, and it has its own fix.
Can you switch rulesets in WoW Forever?
Yes, from the character screen, once you're in. There's a Rulesets option at the top. Players on Blizzard's forums suggested getting into whichever ruleset works first and switching from there, though that's a player workaround, not a Blizzard instruction.
Just remember each ruleset is its own world. Your characters, guild and friends are on the ruleset you made them on, so jumping to PvP because Normal is grey means starting fresh there. If you're still deciding where to play, I went through PvP or PvE in WoW Forever before launch.
Is WoW Forever down right now?
Not as of the morning after launch. Blizzard Watch, which had been tracking the servers all day, now says they "came online a tiny bit later than scheduled, and with a login queue, but so far the launch has gone relatively smoothly", with intermittent lag.
If you get this message on a normal evening later in the week, check three places before you start relogging: the banner in the Battle.net app, the @BlizzardCS account on X, and Blizzard's WoW Forever forums. Forever's status page lists rulesets, not realms, so look for the four ruleset names rather than a realm you remember from Classic.
If you're new to all of this, the WoW Forever release times guide has the launch schedule, and what's new in WoW Forever levelling covers what you're getting into once you're through.
