The traps in 007 First Light are not the kind you stumble through and recover from. One wrong step during The Past Never Dies mission and Bond is dead, full stop. Knowing exactly what you're dealing with before you walk onto 009's boat saves a lot of frustration.
What types of traps appear in The Past Never Dies?
Two distinct trap types show up during this mission, and they behave completely differently. Understanding that difference is the first thing you need to get right.
Booby traps are the first hazard you encounter. These are physical rope-and-grenade setups stretched across pathways on the ship. They're visible once you know what to look for, a red rope running across your path with a grenade attached at one end. Walk into the rope and the grenade detonates, killing Bond instantly.
Laser traps come later in the mission and are a different problem entirely. They're invisible to the naked eye under normal conditions, which makes them significantly more dangerous than the booby traps. Triggering one is just as lethal.

Sprinkler reveals laser path
How do you disable booby traps in 007 First Light?
The good news is that booby traps are straightforward to neutralize. When you spot the red rope, do not approach from the rope side. Instead, walk toward the grenade end of the trap and press Triangle (on PlayStation) to disable it. That's the entire process.
The key detail here is the direction of your approach. Coming at the grenade end rather than the rope end is what triggers the disable prompt instead of the explosion. Rushing through without reading which end is which is how most players accidentally set these off.
Slow down when entering any new area on the ship. The red rope is visible, but only if you're actually looking for it rather than sprinting forward.
How do you detect and get past laser traps?
Laser traps require more work. Since they're invisible under normal conditions, you need the environment itself to reveal them.
The Q-Lens gadget is your starting point. Use it to scan the area and identify interactive environmental objects nearby. These objects, things like water sprinklers and dust from a broken crate, interact with the laser beams when activated and make the beams visible. Once you can actually see the lasers, you can plan a route around them.
Getting past visible lasers depends on the specific setup. Some can be avoided by parkouring around them, using the ship's geometry to go over or around the beam. Others sit low enough that you can crouch underneath to pass safely.
Laser traps cannot be disabled. There is no button prompt, no gadget that shuts them down. Your only option is to navigate around them.
The complication is that some laser traps move. A stationary beam is a puzzle with one solution. A moving beam requires you to watch the pattern first, then time your movement through the gap. Rushing a moving laser is almost always fatal.
How to use the Q-Lens effectively for trap detection
The Q-Lens does more than just highlight lasers. It points you toward the environmental objects that make those lasers visible. Sprinklers and dust clouds are the two confirmed sources in this mission, and the Q-Lens will mark them as interactable when you're close enough.
The practical workflow is: enter a new area, activate the Q-Lens to check for interactable objects, trigger any that appear, then look for the now-visible laser beams before moving further. Skipping the scan step and just walking forward is where players get caught out.
The Q-Lens marks interactive objects, not the lasers themselves. You still need to trigger the environmental object to see the beam.
Tips for getting through the full trap section cleanly
After working through the entire trap sequence, a few patterns become clear.
- Check every doorway and corridor entrance before stepping through. Both trap types appear in transition areas where Bond moves from one section of the ship to another.
- Never sprint through the trap section. The mission does not penalize you for taking your time, and the traps absolutely penalize you for moving too fast.
- Deal with booby traps before looking for lasers. The mission introduces them in that order for a reason. Clear the rope traps first, then shift your attention to the invisible laser hazards.
- For moving lasers, count the full cycle before committing. Watch the beam complete at least one full movement pattern so you know exactly how much time you have to pass through.
The laser trap section is the trickier half of this mission. If you're dying repeatedly, the issue is almost always not watching the movement pattern long enough before attempting to cross.
