The fireplace puzzle appears near the end of Chapter 8, All The Time In The World, during the Carpathian Hotel level. Bond enters a dining room mid-chase and finds the fireplace sealed shut. A mechanism mounted above the fireplace features a circular dial divided into six sections, each marked with a different animal symbol. You need to select the correct combination to trigger the hidden door.
The puzzle catches players off guard because you're already in pursuit mode when it appears. Stopping to decode a symbol sequence is the last thing your brain wants to do.
Where to find the fireplace puzzle clue
Before touching the dial, check the kitchen cart near the fireplace. On top of it sits a torn book page, sometimes listed in your inventory as the "mechanical sketch." Pick it up and interact with it.
The page depicts a chimera, the mythological creature that serves as the symbol of the Grand Carpathian hotel. The chimera is drawn with a lion's head, a goat's body, and a snake for a tail. That creature is your answer. The sketch also shows the fireplace and its mechanism, making the connection explicit once you know what you're looking at.
The mission objective says to "investigate the dining room," which makes some players think they need to hunt for more clues around the space. You don't. The cart note has everything.

How to solve the fireplace puzzle
Walk up to the fireplace mechanism and interact with it to bring up the dial. Select the following three animals:
- Lion
- Goat
- Snake
Order matters here based on how the chimera is described, but the important thing is selecting all three. Once you input the correct combination, a short cutscene plays and the fireplace swings open, revealing a hidden tunnel. Bond steps through and the chase continues.
Don't rush past the area immediately after the fireplace opens. A playing card collectible is available shortly beyond the hidden passage, so take a moment to grab it before pressing on.
